At J. W. Turlington School Students, Teachers Bring Christmas In Art Actually, there are still several nights before Christmas, but the corridor display at J.W. Turlington Elementary School intensifies the anticipation with a recreation of the poetic holiday classic. "Twas the Night Before Christmas." Anxious to stir up the Christmas spirit, language arts teacher Beverly Bowden and school li brarian Betsy Collins collaborated to bring successfully this heart warming Christmas tale to the visual attention of the student body. Mrs. Collins, a gifted artist, worked long to reproduce the verses from the peom. "I enjoyed working on this project, and I'm also pleased with the results," stated Mrs. Collins with a big smile. The colorful pictures were created by the following sixth-grade students: David Patterson. Sandy Hunt. Dan McCrimmon, Harry Graham, Al Crittenden. Perry Shaw, Link Morrisey, Terry Smith, Isaac Adams, and Patrick Mc Dufly. "The children are to be com mended," stated Mrs. Bowden, "for their outstanding efforts. They worked very hard to see the completion of this display." Art teacher Donna Bullock also expounded on the children's creati vity and talent in art. The bulletin board Christmas tree was decor ated completely with ornaments made by the children. C. are larger. This does not mean that hens are more tender than toms. Basic tenderness depends on the age of the live bird. All young turkeys, whether toms or hens, are tender and all Butterball turkeys are young birds. 2. What size turkey should you buy in order to serve 12 people? Answer: To serve 12 people select an 18 pound turkey. The rule of thumb is to allow 1 '/j pounds of ready-to-stufT turkey per person. This guide will provide generous servings with enough left for second day dishes. 3. When should you stuff a turkey? Answer: Stuff the turkey just before roasting. To speed the preparation you can assemble all the dry ingredients for the stuffing the night before and store them in covered bowl on the kitchcn counter. The next morning add the liquid ingredients and stuff the bird. 4. Should you baste the turkey as it roasts? Answer: You may spoon drip pings or melted shortening over the turkey as it roasts, but such basting is not neccssary for juicy meat. Frequent basting over the surface of the turkey gives an attractive appearance but it does not go through the turkey skin. 5. What kind of pan should you use to roast a turkey? Answer: For a beautiful turkey to carve at the table, use a shallow roasting pan about 2'/j inches deep. Use no cover and do not add water. Use just the pan fitted with a rack. However, if you prefer, you may use a covered roaster. 6. If you roast a turkey breast side-down. will it be juicier? Answer: According to early re search. the only advantage of roasting a turkey breast-side-down was slightly more moist white meat. This practice seems less important with deep-basted turkeys. In addi tion to requiring a special V-shaped rack, the method may be dan gerous since it is necessary to turn a large hot turkey halfway through the roasting time. 7. Is it necessary to use a rack during roasting? Answer: A rack is necessary to proper turkey roasting since it keeps the turkey from cooking in its own juices. A rack also allows good circulation of heat for more even cooking. 8. Do you need to salt the body cavity of the turkey before putting in the stuffing? Answer: You may salt the body cavity; however, the salt cannot penetrate the rib cage of the turkey and will not flavor the meat. 9. Can a turkey be roasted at 250 degrees F? Answer: Home economists do not recommend roasting turkeys at 250 degrees F. At this oven temperature the stuffing and the turkey may take more than 4 hours to pass through the critical range of 40 degrees to 140 degrees F and so may be unsafe. Because the turkey is not a uniform shape, surface areas tend to become dry while the interior finishes cooking. For best results set your oven at 325 degrees F. 10. Is there a faster, yet safe, method to thaw a turkey besides defrosting it in the refrigerator? Answer: You can safely reduce thawing time by placing the frozen turkey in its original wrapper in a deep pan or in the sink and cover it with cool water. Change the water occasionally so that the surface stays cold while the turkey thaws. Room temperature thawing is not recom mended because the surface of the turkey stays at room temp erature too long. wiz. s So.+. bee li oa fill i^ercVaTvJ (s?_ uP +* 5qv ?
