Unanimous Choice For Linebacker
Locklear Named To
All- Southeastern
- William Locklear.^an outstand
ing linebacker for Hoke High, has
been named to the Southeastern 4A
All-Conference Football Squad.
This honor is bestowed by a vote
of all the head football coaches in
the conference for a players ability
and performance during the foot
ball season. Locklear was selected
by unanimous vote of the seven
coaches in the conference.
^ Now a junior and defensive
captain, he has started on defense
for the Bucks for the last two years
and will be counted on heavily in
1982, as he was in the 1981 season,
to lead the Bucks' defensive squad.
During the 1981 season, he led
the team in solo tackles each game.
He accounted for a total of 108
tackles in the team game season for
an average of 10.8 tackles per
game. He also was very high on the
1 list in tackle assists and had an
interception in the E.E. Smith
game.
In commenting on William's
selection to the honor team. Buck
Head Football Coach Tom Jones
remarked, "In 13 years of coach
ing, I've never had a better line
backer in all areas. William has
very good anticipation and speed
and has excellent lateral move
ment. With William returning to

The Upchurch Junior High
School boys' basketball team won
two more games last week, staying
undefeated, and bringing their
record to 3-0 for the season up to
that date.
The Eagles defeated Edgewood
I of Fayetteville 56-26 and East Lee
of Sanford 38-28.
The Eagles raced to an 18-0 lead
in the first quarter against Edge
wood, then coasted the rest of the
way. All Upchurch players saw
action. The Eagles who scored were

anchor our defense in 1982, I
sincerely believe we will be out
standing on defense."
In expressing the administra
tion's reaction to the selection. Dr.
Lenwood Simpson said, "I would
like to express my deep apprecia
tion to William Locklear for being
selected All-Conference in football
this year. To be successful in
football requires much hard work
and dedication. William gave us
both, for which I am very proud. I
wish him the very best in the
future."
William is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. Russell Locklear of Rt. 1, Red
Springs. His father is employed by
the Hoke County Board of Educa
tion as the home-school visitor for
the Indian Education Act program.
William is very active in other
sports. He served as catcher on the
JV baseball team during his fresh
man and sophomore years and is
looking forward to playing for the
Buck's varsity baseball team this
season.
Williairi is also active in several
clubs, especially the IEA program.
His educational plans are not yet
complete, but he hopes to attend
some large university and partici
pate in both football and baseball.

started pressing and staged a
comeback only to find time wasn't
on its side.

scoring was more spaced out, led by

both teams posing little excitement.

Road Races Awards
Paul Hunt won awards in two
road races held Saturday in Harts
ville, S.C. - the Hartsville Lung
Runs sponsored by the Hartsville
Recreation Department.
Hunt won the 17-and-under age
division in the 10 km (6.2. mile)
road race in a time of 33:56. This
was an average of 5:24 per mile. He
also placed fourth over-all in a field
of 189 runners.
Hunt also competed in the
one- mile race and won first place
over-all. He ran the one-mile
course, after only 20 minutes rest
from the first race, and completed
it in a time of 5:15.

The annual Christmas party for
employees of Faberge. Inc., will be
held Saturday from 1 p.m. to 3
p.m. in Gibson Gymnasium at

Cape Fear Varsities Win
Cape Fear's varsity boys got even
with Hoke's last week for Novem
ber 24 loss, defeating the Bucks
58-53 on the Cape Fear court.
The home town girls also won,
turning back the Hoke squad
56-42. The Cape Fear girls also had
won the November game. The
Hoke boys' Junior Varsity, how
ever, won 55-48.
The return matches were played
December 8.
In the boys' game, the winners
were led by James Rhone with 26
points. It was Cape Fear's first win
of the season, and Hoke's third loss
in five games. Cape Fear's other
scorers were Preston McLaurin 10,
Todd Butler 11, Evans 3, and
Home and Stell 4 each.
Greg Hollingsworth led the Hoke
scoring with 19. Eldred Blue scored
14, Terry Thomas 10, and McClain
8.
Cape Fear was one point ahead
at halftime, scoring 30 points in the
first two periods.
The result also left the Hoke girls
with a 2-3 record for the season to
date.
Cape Fear's individual high scor
er was Julie Carter with 18 points.
Rubby Melvin added 12 and also
picked off 15 rebounds. Donna
Corbin scored 10 points. Jones 5,
Starling 3, Tew, Temple and
McMillan 2 each, and Bass 1.
For Hoke, Debra Love and
Sabrina Barnes scored 16 each.
Monroe 8. and Adams 2.
The score at half time was 25-19
in favor of Cape Fear.
The JVs win was their third
straight following their opening
season loss to Cape Fear last
month.

At Mid-Pines
One Raeford tennis player won a
division title and another placed
second in another division of the
Christmas Seals Tennis Tourna
ment held December 6 at Mid
Pines near Southern Pines.
The winner was Ches Hayes, who
defeated Sandy Mclver of Southern
Pines in the finals of the men's
division. The runnerup was Mari
lyn Semones, in the women's
division. Sue Thomasson of South
ern Pines won the division title.
