At 1981 Achievement Night Outstanding Hoke 4-H'ers Are Honored The Hoke County 4-H Program held its Achievement Night De cember 10 at the Hoke County Library. Members were recognized for their accomplishments this year. Kim Hawkins, a 4-H'er, was the master of ceremonies. The Ameri can and 4-H pledge was led by Julie Riley and Ronda Tatum, and the 4-H motto was led by Sandy Lupo. Tammie Hendrix gave a devo tional. Danny McGougan, a former 4-H'er, was the guest speaker. He told the 4-H'ers about some of his experiences in 4-H and challenged them to get more involved in 4-H projects and activities. Julie Riley recognized the 4-H leaders and presented a certificate of appreciation and support to Joye McNeill, Frances Hawkins and Sharon English. The Hillcrest 4-H club was also presented a certificate for the community service projects they have done this year. Willie Featherstone, Jr., county Extension chairman, and Alice Lancaster, associate Extension 4-H agent, presented 4-H'ers with pro ject awards and special awards. County-winning project winners were presenting a trophy, pin, certificate, ribbon and $10 scholar ship to be used for a 4-H event such as camp or congress. Other 4-H'ers received blue or red ribbons for their projects. Outstanding 4-H'ers each received a trophy and a $20 scholarship for 4-H camp or con gress. The "I Dare You" award winner was presented a copy of the "1 Dare You * book written by William Darforth. The project winners are: Tracy Riley - Health I, Red ribbons and *Horse - Junior County Winner. She was county winner in the project and received a $10 scholarship. The book "I Dare You" was written by William Darforth, who was one of the founders of the American Youth Foundation. Sharon McNeill is the recipient of this award this year. She is presently a member of the District and State 4-H Council and is serving as District 4-H Reporter. She was county and district winner in the Poultry Barbecue demonstra tion and also participted in the state contest. She also represented N.C. at the National Egg and Poultry Conference. Sharon at tended Citizenship Washington Focus. She helped 4-H Crime Prevention Awareness Day. lock in. and district retreats. Outstanding Jr. 4-H'er Julie Riley has been a 4-H member for three years. She has served as secretary of the Hillcrest 4-H Club, and has served on the awards committee, foods commit tee for the lock-in. and 4-H Crime Prevention Committee. She was a county demonstration winner and also participated in district activity day. She is Hoke County's repre sentative to the District 4-H Coun cil. She has also participated in fund raising projects for the club. Christ mas parade float committee. Julie helped prepare county exhibit for 4-H Crime Prevention Awareness Day. She participated in horse workshops and has attended the 4-H Horse Club. Outstanding Senior 4-H'er Tammie Hendrix has been in 4-H for five years. She is serving as Hoke County's representative on the State 4-H Council. She did two radio commercials and one news paper article for National 4-H Week and made posters for Crime Prevention Week, National 4-H Week, and all horse meetings. She attended 4-H congress and was Hoke County's voting delegate. Tammie helped plan the club's lock-in and was chairman of the foods committee. She was chair man of the fund-raising project for the club and chairman of the Christmas parade float committee. She also helped organize the 4-H Horse Club. Noble Expected To Run Also Parnell To Run For Sen. State Rep. David Parnell of Parkton is expected to have to win the Democratic nomination in the May primary from the State Sen. Sam Noble, a fellow Democrat, in his effort to replace Noble in the Senate's 12th District seat. Parnell, one of the three state representatives for the the 21st District, which includes Hoke, an nounced last week he would run for Noble's seat. The 12th Senatorial District is composed of Hoke and Robeson counties. Noble is serving his first regular two-year term. He went to the Senate prior to the 1980 election by appointment to fill the vacancy created by the death of State Sen. Luther Britt. He was unopposed for election in 1980. Parnell is a Parkton business man and a farmer and is serving his fourth term in the State House of Representatives. In the 1981 General Assembly, he served as chairman of the House Base Budget Committee on General Government and was reported to have been instrumental in initiating budget cuts of $5.25 million for fiscal 1981-82. He also is vice chairman of the House Com mittee on Public Utilities and Courts and Judicial Districts. "Quite frankly," he was quoted as saying last week, of his decision to run for the Senate, "I've had a tremendous amount of people come to me and talk to me about running for the Senate. And so I think your vote and your voice carries a little more weight." Parnell is serving with William Gay and Horace Locklear as the 21st District's representatives in the House. The district's other counties are Robeson and Scotland. Parnell and Locklear won their new House terms and Gay was elected to his first term in 1980. Gay, Democrat as are Parnell and Locklear, succeeded State Rep. Robert Davis when Davis finished fourth behind him in the six candidate contest in the party primary. The three who won the Democratic nominations then were unopposed in the general election of the following November. Parnell during the 1979 session of the General Assembly served as vice chairman of the House Agriculture Committee and the Committee on Rules and Opera tions of the House. During the 1977 and 1979 sessions, he served on the Appropriations Committee and as a committee member helped draft the bills for state appropria tions for the subsequent two-year periods. He is active in the Parkton on Baptist Church: he has served as a Sunday school teacher and a deacon, among other offices. He also has served on the Board of Trustees and its Executive Com mittee of Meredith College in Raleigh, a Baptist school for women, and on the Board of Directors of the North Carolina Association of Private Colleges and Universities. He is president of J.Q. Parnell, Inc., and Parnell Oil Co., Inc., of Parkton, and of Tobacco Land Warehouse, Inc., of Fairmont. In a statement, Parnell said that the experience gained during his four terms in the Legislature would serve to increase his effectiveness in the Senate and thereby enable him to be of greater benefit to his J.H. The choir presented the Christmas Contata. The choir members were attractively dressed in red and white and the ladies wore red and white corsages. The program was reported very good and the church was very beautifully decorated. Correction please: It was inad vertently reported last week that Homer Terry was a patient in Cape Fear Valley Hospital in Fayette ville. It should have been reported that he was a patient in Womack Army Hospital in Fort Bragg. This error is deeply regretted. The community was saddened by the death of Miss Sarah Patterson who passed away Thursday. De cember 10, after being quite ill for a long time. They visited in the rooms of the ones confined to bed and then entertained the ones FHA Holds Annual Yule Dinner The Hoke High Future Home makers of America Club held its annual Christmas covered-dish dinner December 9. Every member had been asked to bring a covered dish. Four FHA advisors and 58 members attended. The 1981 dinner was termed a success.
