EDUCARE is one of the newest and most exciting developments of Sandhills Center for Mental Health. Mental Retardation and Substance Abuse Services. EDU CARE is the active educational outreach component of the Center's Consultation, Education and Pre ^ vention Program. ^ EDUCARE was developed out of the understanding that today's pressures often create stress in a person's life. However, these pres sures need not prevent growth. In fact, the pressure of everyday life can even be looked at as a challenge and opportunity for us to learn and to realize our potential for positive change. EDUCARE has been created to provide important in formation and to help build skills for personal growth, relationship enhancement, and professional de velopment. EDUCARE provides lectures, classes, workshops and other spe cial educational activities for groups of interested community residents, primarily in Anson. Hoke. Montgomery, Moore and Richmond Counties. Most EDU CARE programs are provided on a quarterly basis, with participants having the opportunity to register in advance for those programs with limited enrollment. EDUCARE's first quarter will begin with January and will run through March. Programs will include, among others, "Psycho logy of Addictions," "Becoming a Successful Parent," "Administra tion of Volunteer Services,' "Un derstanding Families." "Stresp Management," and more. Some of these programs will have Continu ing Education Units awarded upon completion of the courses. In addition to the regularly scheduled programs, a group with special interests may request a lecture, class or workshop on a topic of its choice. EDUCARE start will gladly contract to provide the program at a time and place that is mutually convenient EDUCARE instructors are highly trained and reputable pro fessionals in the fields of mental health, mental retardation, sub stance abuse and related areas. Fees for EDUCARE programs are based upon the number of hours of instruction and the num ber of participants in each pro gram. Club Working On Shoplifting Problem Here The Public Affairs of the Rae t'ord Woman's Club is working on a local anti-shoplifting awareness program in Hoke County. Shoplifting is the largest mone tary crime in the nation. For each $1 stolen in bank robberies in this country every year. S350 is shop lifted. In North Carolina alone, *400 million in shoplifting and shoplifting ? related losses were reported last year by the North Carolina Merchants Association. Shoplifting is a serious crime and should not be taken lightly by any citizen of our countv. Shoplifting is a misdemeanor and upon conviction shall be punishable by a fine or imprison ment or both. ' Girl Scouts Entertain Rest Home People visited the Open Arms Rest Home recently, spending the afternoon with the residents. Ten members along with three pre schoolers and their leaders. Mrs. Karen Rooks, Linda Tatum and Harriet Terry, presented the residents with ceramic ornaments made by the Scouts and entertained them by singing Christmas carols. An afternoon of love and the Christmas spirit was enjoyed by all. The scouts and their leaders would like to say a very special "Thank you" to Mrs. Grover McMillan for teaching them cross stitch for their Christmas project.
