Area Incidents Money, Personal Property Is Stolen A total of $1,031.20 in cash was stolen from cabinets at Burlington Industries, the Raeford" Police De partment was notified on Christ mas. Police Chief Leonard Wiggins ?aid someone broke into two cabi nets in the Burlington commissar)', which is operated by Mid-South Vending Co. of Aberdeen and got the money. All but a small amount consisted of nickels, dimes and quarters. The thief or thieves got into the commissary by breaking a window pane of the commissary door. Other complaints received by the police follow. C. Peterson of 20"" Wright St. reported Monday a S25 bicycle was stolen from his property. Jasper Morrison reported Sun day someone stole S458 worth of tools from his truck Saturday night while it was parked in his yard at 106 Lamont St. Police charged Anna Denise Thomas, Rt. 1, Raeford, with larceny of a $12.99 bathrobe from Macks Stores December 22 after the store reported the alleged theft. The Hoke County Sheriffs De partment reported the following complaints among others received this month. Edger M. Edge of Rt. 1 . Lumber Bridge, reported someone broke into his home December 21 or 22 and stole SI. 515 worth of personal property. The articles stolen were two shotguns, clothing, two watches, a ring, a barbell set, and a train set. A graveside service was con ducted Monday afternoon in Rae ford Cemetery by the Rev. Arthur Winstead. Mr. Smith is survived by his son. Mitchell Smith of Gainesville. Ga.; his mother. The filing period runs through February I. The exceptions are candidates for the offices of state represen tative. state senator, and con fressman. who cannot file before ebruary 15. The difference in dates is caused by the redistricting controversy affecting the offices, Rose Sturgeon, executive secretary of the elections board, explained Tuesday in announcing the filing period. The Hoke County offices up for election this year are three places Downtown Raeford Stores Report Yule Business Good To Fantastic Christmas season sales were "good" to "fantastic" in downtown Raeford stores, a spot check shows. The reports were given by man agers questioned at random. Not all stores were checked. "Fantastic" was the word Kathy Daniels used to describe sales at Cato's. which she manages. She added the Christmas sales were a little ahead of last year's and the store got "a lot of out-of-towners." Mrs. Daniels said, however, night sales, held by downtown stores December 14 weekdays and Saturdays through Christmas Eve, were not as good as she had hoped . James Wood at Western Auto reported the store had a "real good Christmas, right up to the last minute." He added nights were "good as usual," compared with previous Christmas season nights but "nothing great." Myrtle Miller at Sears, which does a mail-order business only, reported being "very pleased" with December. Sales were a lot better than last year's in the same month, she said. In fact, she added. Sears here has had three good months and. furthermore, she's been pleased with the business it has been doing all year. At R&R Outfitters, manager Ann Santa Ana reported Christmas business was very good, and Christ mas week's and especially Christ mas Eve's "very, very good." In Edenborough Shopping Cen ter. Macks's Christmas business was as good as last year's -- sales were excellent -- manager Mike Madox reported. Christmas business also was "real good" at Moore's department store, manager Greg Wilkerson said. "No complaints," he added. "The people in Raeford have been real good to us all year." on the Board of County Com missioners. clerk of Superior t Court, sheriff, and coroner. The county commissioners' posi tions to be filled this year are those of John Balfour, the board chair man; and Mabel Riley and James Hunt. The other commissioners. Danny DeVane and Neill Mc Phatter, won new four - year terms in the 1980 elections. The other incumbents whose offices are up for election this year are Juanita Edmund, clerk of I Superior Court; Sheriff David Bar- I rington; and Coroner Frank Crumpler. No one had announced up to Tuesday for any of the county offices, but in the 12th State Senatorial District which includes Hoke County. State Rep. David Parnell of Parkton announced early this month he would run for State Sen. Sam Noble's seat. Both are ,, Democrats and would run first for J the party's nomination in the May primary before facing the voters in the November general election if Noble runs for a new term.
