WINE AND CHEESE TASTING
Cheese and wine tastings are easy
to organize and require little time
and equipment.
To begin, choose four or five
cheeses, selecting those that offer a
variety of flavors from mild to
sharp -- and a blend of textures
from creamy smooth to firm,
taking into consideration the shape
and color contrasts available.
Then select an equal number of
wines, following a simple rule for
selection: the milder the cheese, the
more mellow the wine; and the
sharper flavored the cheese, the
more robust the wine.
Allow a half pound of cheese and
a half bottle of wine per quest.
Cheeses should be served at room
temperature if you're to enjoy their
true flavors. So remove full -

USE LESS ELECTRIC LIGHT
ING AND SAVE
An effective way to save energy is
to use less electric lighting in your
home. This may sound simple, yet
turning off the lights or using the
most efficient lighting fixtures are
two ideas that are often overlooked
-? probably because these changes
don't make a substantial money
savings right away.
Even so, you can cut lighting
costs quite a bit just by turning off
the lights when you leave the room.
Having light switches located in
easy - to ? reach places could
encourage this.
Another idea. Clean fixtures and
bulbs at least once a year. Clean
fixtures use less electricity and
make it possible to use lower watt
bulbs.
Keep in mind that fluorescent
lights are about four times as
efficient as incandescent light
bulbs. Fluorescent lamps coat more
than regular bulbs, but they save
money in the long run because they
use less energy and last longer.
There are adapters that allow
you to use fluorescent bulbs in
incandescent bulb sockets.
Three-way bulbs allow you to
adjust light for specific activities --
lower for general room activities
and higher for reading or other
close work. But using a three-way
bulb at the highest setting only
won't save money or energy. A
100-watt, three way bulb just isn't
as efficient as a single 100-watt
bulb.
It adds up to this. To help save
energy and money, take advantage
of daylight whenever possible, buy
fewer lamps and reduce bulb
wattage.
In fact, a good rule of thumb
might be to use the minimum
wattage needed for comfort and to
avoid eye strain.
