T. Sanford Boys, Girls, Hoke JV Win Terry Sanford won both varsity games Friday night from Hoke High on.the Hoke court. The Hoke JVs, however, came through with a 73-38 decision over Sanford's JVs. The Bulldogs turned back the Hoke High boys 77-60, and the Sanford girls won, 47M2. The win put the Sanford boys in first place in the Southeastern Conference with a 6-1 record, and the loss sent the former league ? leading Hoke boys to a 5-2 mark. 8-7 over-all. The Sanford girls pushed their conference record to 7-0 with the win and their season's mark to 17-1. Men's Basketball Scores The Men's Basketball League sponsored by the Hoke County Parks and Recreation Commission continued play last week. On January 25, Hollingsworth Barbers defeated the Suns 58-36. K. McDonald 23 points, L. McDonald with 9, L. McBryde 8, and M. McLaughlin with 8 points were high for Hollingsworth Barbers. Leading the Suns were Nathan McNeill with 14 points, N. McNaill had 12. and J.T. McPhat ter tossed in 4 points. In the second game of the night, the All Stars squeaked by the 76ers. The game was close all four quarters witfi the All Stars winning 76-74. R. Maynor scored 26 points while right on his heels was G. Maynor with 25 points for the All Stars.* M. The Eagles got off to an early start, taking a 10-4 lead after one quarter of play and a 13-7 edge at halftime. The Eagles had their strongest quarter after the break, scoring 14 points in the third quarter and holding the opponents to a 2 points, ending up with 36 to Irwin's 13. T. The Bucks won the first game, plated at Terry Sanford, 68-60. The Hoke girls lost their first meeting with Sanford's girls, however. The Hoke JVs also won the first contest with Sanford, 66-45. In Friday night's game between the boys' varsities, Mike Smith, 6-4 center for Sanford, scored 32 points, the best individual total of the night. Hoke's Eldred Blue was next with 20. In the girls' game, Faye Sken teris of Sanford led the individual scoring with 17, and Hoke's Sabrina Barnes was next with 15. Their lone loss in their 14 games of the season was 66-64 to Lumberton Monday at Lumber ton. Now Hoke will represent the Southeastern Conference in the freshman playoffs if Lumberton loses its makeup game with West Lee; or if Lumberton beats West Lee and then Hoke wins the toss of the coin to break the tie between the two teams. The win over Hoke left Lumberton with a 12-1 record. In the other games just precedijiR the Lumberton contest, the Hoke Ninth Graders downed Scotland 56 to 29, then smothered Reid Ross 64-38. In the Lumberton game, the lead changed hands several times in the first quarter with the Bucks taking command at the end of the period, 13-12. But in the second quarter, Lumberton outscored Hoke 22-9 to lead 34-22 at half time. Then Lumberton added 1 1 points while Hoke was picking up 9. But after that the Bucks' scoring machine went into high gear blitz ing Lumberton with a 21 -point scoring burst while holding Lumberton to 13 in the third. In the final period, the game was close all the way to the end of regular time, and the teams went into the overtime period tied 60-60. In the extra period the Bucks jumped to lead, 64-60, but a three point play and another foul brought doom to the Hoke girls. Then they missed a shot in the final 10 seconds, and Lumberton got the rebound. The Bucks tied up the ball for a jump ball but time ran out. In the Scotland game. Sheila Southerland of Hoke led all scorers with 20 points, and her teammate, Dela Pridgen, scored 17. In the second game, Lisa Smith of Hoke led all scorers with 26, while Dela Pridgen and Sheila Southerland scored 16 and 13 respectively.
