T. Sanford Boys,
Girls, Hoke JV Win
Terry Sanford won both varsity
games Friday night from Hoke
High on.the Hoke court. The Hoke
JVs, however, came through with a
73-38 decision over Sanford's JVs.
The Bulldogs turned back the
Hoke High boys 77-60, and the
Sanford girls won, 47M2.
The win put the Sanford boys in
first place in the Southeastern
Conference with a 6-1 record, and
the loss sent the former league ?
leading Hoke boys to a 5-2 mark.
8-7 over-all.
The Sanford girls pushed their
conference record to 7-0 with the
win and their season's mark to
17-1.

The Men's Basketball League
sponsored by the Hoke County
Parks and Recreation Commission
continued play last week.
On January 25, Hollingsworth
Barbers defeated the Suns 58-36.
K. McDonald 23 points, L.
McDonald with 9, L. McBryde 8,
and M. McLaughlin with 8 points
were high for Hollingsworth
Barbers. Leading the Suns were
Nathan McNeill with 14 points, N.
McNaill had 12. and J.T. McPhat
ter tossed in 4 points.
In the second game of the night,
the All Stars squeaked by the
76ers. The game was close all four
quarters witfi the All Stars winning
76-74. R. Maynor scored 26 points
while right on his heels was G.
Maynor with 25 points for the All
Stars.*
M. Brown led all scoring with 28
points while D. Adams tossed in
23, and V. McDougald 13 points
for the 76ers.
In Tuesday night action, the
Suns 'defeated the Mindblowers
"1-57. N. McNaill scored 17
joints. M. McGregor 16. L.
Crawford 14, and J. Carthens 8
for the Suns. J.J. Williams led all
scoring with 28 points. W. Ellerbee
had 9 and A. Monroe 8 points for
the Mindblowers.
In the second game, the All Stars
squeezed by the Bullets 76-66. G.

points, D. Huff got 17, and R.
Maynor 13 points for the All Stars.

In Wednesday night action,
Hollingsworth Barbers defeated
the Mindblowers 76-57. L.
McDonald and K. McDonald with
21 each and J. McDonald with 10
were high for Hollingsworth
Barbers.
The Mindblowers' scoring at
tack came from L. Ellerbee with 12
points, C. Melvin with 12, J.J.
Williams with 10, and J. Melvin
with 10 points.
In the second game, the Bullets
downed the Suns 68-55. F. Barnes
led all scoring with 33 points, while
M. Jones tossed in 19 for the
Bullets. On the other end of the
court, the Suns were led by M.
McLaughlin with 19 points, J.
Carthens with 14, and L.
Crawford with 10.
In Thursday night action, the
All Stars defeated the Mind
blowers 89-59.
G. Maynor scored 22, Robin
Maynor 13, and B. Leslie 12 for
the All Stars. The Mindblowers'
leading scorers were J. Melvin 14.
L. Ellerbee 13. and W. Ellerbee 10.
The final game of the week
matched Hollingsworth Barbers
against the 76ers. Hollingsworth
Barbers gathered the win 65-58,
with good shooting from L.
McBride 18 points, K. McDonald
15. and D. Virgil 15 while the
76ers' scoring attack came from V.
McDougald 20 and M. Brown 18
points.

The Lady Eagles defeated Irwin
36-13 January 20.
The Eagles got off to an early
start, taking a 10-4 lead after one
quarter of play and a 13-7 edge at
halftime.
The Eagles had their strongest
quarter after the break, scoring 14
points in the third quarter and
holding the opponents to a 2
points, ending up with 36 to
Irwin's 13.
T. Hollingsowrth lead the Eagles
with 10 points followed by V.
Southerland's 9.

The Lady Eagles extended their
record to 8-2 by overtaking

Both teams were cautious the
first quarter, staying even 4 to 4.
The Eagles held Edgewood
scoreless the second quarter to take
a 12-4 lead at halftime.
The Eagles seem to always play
better the second half of the game,
outscoring Edgewood by 9 points.
It was the best inside game the
Eagles have played.
V. Southerland lead the Eagles
with 11 points followed by T. Hol
lingsworth and D. Gupton with 8
points each.
Burkics lead Edgewood with 6

The Hoke girls were 5-2 in
conference play and 10-5 overall
with the Friday loss.
The Hoke squads played Scot
land at Scotland Tuesday and will
meet Reid Ross Friday at Hoke.
The Sanford boys' win evened
the season's series with Hoke. The
Bucks won the first game, plated at
Terry Sanford, 68-60. The Hoke
girls lost their first meeting with
Sanford's girls, however.
The Hoke JVs also won the first
contest with Sanford, 66-45.
In Friday night's game between
the boys' varsities, Mike Smith, 6-4
center for Sanford, scored 32
points, the best individual total of
the night. Hoke's Eldred Blue was
next with 20.
In the girls' game, Faye Sken
teris of Sanford led the individual
scoring with 17, and Hoke's
Sabrina Barnes was next with 15.

High Point High School's varsi
ty and junior varsity basketball
teams won close games January 26
from Lumberton's teams at Hoke
High.
The boys won, 54-53, with
Eldred Blue providing the margin,
following up an unsuccessful field
goal try in the last 1 1 seconds.
The boys' Junior Varsity took a
59-51 victory.
The girls won, 55-53. Hoke's
Sabrina Barnes led the individual
scoring for both teams with 25
points, followed by teammate
Deborah Love with 17. Lumber
ton's top scorer was Bennett with
14.
The wins came in Southeastern
Conference contests. The results
gave the Hoke varsity teams a 5-1
conference record each.

The Hoke High freshman girls
won two games and lost one, but in
overtime, during the past week.
Their lone loss in their 14 games
of the season was 66-64 to
Lumberton Monday at Lumber
ton.
Now Hoke will represent the
Southeastern Conference in the
freshman playoffs if Lumberton
loses its makeup game with West
Lee; or if Lumberton beats West
Lee and then Hoke wins the toss of
the coin to break the tie between
the two teams. The win over Hoke
left Lumberton with a 12-1 record.
In the other games just
precedijiR the Lumberton contest,
the Hoke Ninth Graders downed
Scotland 56 to 29, then smothered
Reid Ross 64-38.
In the Lumberton game, the lead
changed hands several times in the
first quarter with the Bucks taking
command at the end of the period,
13-12.

to lead 34-22 at half time.
Then Lumberton added 1 1
points while Hoke was picking up
9. But after that the Bucks' scoring
machine went into high gear blitz

In the final period, the game was
close all the way to the end of
regular time, and the teams went
into the overtime period tied 60-60.
In the extra period the Bucks
jumped to lead, 64-60, but a three
point play and another foul
brought doom to the Hoke girls.
Then they missed a shot in the final
10 seconds, and Lumberton got the
rebound. The Bucks tied up the
ball for a jump ball but time ran
out.
In the Scotland game. Sheila
Southerland of Hoke led all
scorers with 20 points, and her
teammate, Dela Pridgen, scored
17.
In the second game, Lisa Smith
of Hoke led all scorers with 26,
while Dela Pridgen and Sheila
Southerland scored 16 and 13
respectively.
Baseball Practice
The Hoke County Semi-Pro
Baseball Association has scheduled
practice for candidates for the
squad Wednesday and Friday, 6-8
p.m. The players will meet at Gib
son Gymnasium.
An alternate practice will be held
3-5 p.m. Sunday. The players will
meet at Gibson.

The Hoke boys won, 81-67, and
the girls downed the Lady Patriots
.38-23.
The games were scheduled ori
