Agricultural

News
by Willie Featherstone, Jr.
County Extension Chairman
A new sweet potato cultivar was
released in 1981.
"Pope" was named~ tor Dr.
Daniel T. Pope who was ihe sweet
potato breeder in North Carolina
from the early 1950s until his
retirement in 1975. Pope developed
the cultivar "Jewel" which has
become the most important sweet
potato in the United States.
Pope is a high-yielding, early
maturing cultivar which has high
resistance to Fusarium wilt, south
ern rootknot nematodes and flood
ing damage ("souring"). It has
moderate resistance to Strepto
myces soil rot (pox) and internal
cork virus. It is equal to or slightly
better than 'Jewel' in its resistance
to wireworms and grubs and has
moderate resistance to sweet potato
flea beetle. Pope has excellent
baking and canning quality. Pope
texture is not as creamy and
smooth as 'Jewel', but it con
sistently rates higher in taste panels
because of flavor.
This new cultivar has been tested
in yield trials with Jewel and
Centennial for several -years. In
North Carolina and in national
I trials. Pope yielded nore No. 1's,
canners. and jumbos than either
Jewel or Centennial. Sprout pro
duction is equivalent to that of
Jewel. Pope roots can be stored for
9 to 12 months with little internal
breakdown.
High yields, resistance to flood
ing damage and moderate resis
tance to Streptomyces soil rot
should make Pope valuable to
growers in North Carolina. Pope Is
highly recommended as an addition
to the cultlvars now available.
