Roekfish News by Polly Barnard Chris White son of Mr. and Mrs. James White was inducted into the Air Force January 22, and is training at the Air Force Base Training Center. San Antonio, Texas. Lt. and Mrs. Owen T. Blevins of Fort Bragg had dinner with Mr. and Mrs. Alton McCulloch Friday evening. The Circle of the Women of Philippi Presbyterian Church met in the home of Mrs. R.H. Gibson Monday evening February 8 at 7:00 o'clock with 8 present. Mrs. Jean Newton led the Bible study. After the meeting adjourned the hostess served refreshments. Mrs. R.H. Gibson spent last weekend with Mrs. Sally Faircloth of Parkton and attended morning worship service at the Presbyterian Church. Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Barnard j went to Apex the past Sunday. On ? their trip they visited the B. Kverette Jordan Dam and sur rounding lake site. The project represents a tremendous amount of work and a beautiful job of diverting nature. Robert Carson celebrated his 5th birthday with a party at Hardees the past Sunday afternoon with approximately I7 attending. Every one enjoyed birthday cake, ham burgers and drinks. He received many nice gifts. Happy Birthday Robert!! The Acteens and GA's of Pitt man Grove Baptist Church had a Valentine party Wednesday even ing February 10 which was their first fund raising activity. They had a "Cake Walk." a "not-so-newly wed" game and a "spoon relay". The girls did the decorating and Mrs. Shirley Boahn donated the beautiful centerpiece. Refresh ments were served and everyone had a good time. The party was a tremendous success! The W.M.U. of Pittman Grove Baptist Church had a "Stork Shower" February 3 in the Fellow ship Hall for Mrs. Bruce Swann. Approximately 20 attended and she received many helpful gifts. Re freshments were served and Carol Clarke provided the beautiful shower cake. Mrs. A. W. Wood, Sr. would like to express thanks to everyone for their cards, flowers, candy, visits, prayers and kind thoughts of concern while a patient in the hospital and now recuperating at home. She appreciates everything everyone did and is getting along very well. She states; with the approaching warmer weather she hopes she will be able to begin getting out a little. The fire that destroyed the old home that we still remember as the A.W. Wood. Sr. house in Rockfish was terrible. It is so sad to see an old landmark go like that. She was presented a gift bv her co workers. Mrs. Mary Long of Fayetteville visited Mrs. Louise Watson last week. Mr. and Mrs. Ray Parks and children of Fayetteville. Mr. and Mrs. Mike Reynolds and children of Aberdeen visited Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Reynolds the past Sunday. FHA Week Activities Last week the FHA Club of the Hoke County High School observed National FHA Week with daily activities. Monday flowers were sent to the Hoke County High School main office and to the Hoke County school board office. Mondav night the meeting was held in the Hoke County High School Library with guest speaker Mrs. Gladys Gil christ from the Hoke County Department of Social Services. Her informative presentation was on the "Changes Occuring in Programs." Valentine refreshments were made and served by Mrs. Marie Brown and Mrs. Wanda McPhaul. Tuesday a Valentine Party was given to the TMH Class at Hoke County High School. Wednesday FHA members and advisors had a trip to Fayetteville for dinner and skating. Thursday the FHA Club re membered the residents of Open Arms Rest Home with a Valentine card and candy. Friday, the FHA'ers placed Val entines and candy in the boxes of all staff members of Hoke County High School remembering them on the special day. On Friday. Civic League To Have Black History Program The Hoke County Civic League will present its annual Black His tory Program Friday, February 26, at 7:30 p.m. at Freedom Chapel AME Zion Church. The guest speaker will be Dr. Arthur Bradford, family practi tioner from St. Pauls. A native of Knoxville. Tenn., Bradford received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Johnson C. Smith University, Charlotte, and medical degree from Howard University, Washington, D.C. He came to St. Pauls in 1975 with the Health Corps, and in 1977 began single practice. In 1979 he was awarded certification as Fellow of the American Academy of Family Phy sicians. This program is designed to appeal to all age groups, and families are encouraged to attend together. In addition to Bradford's speech, the program will consist of singing traditional Negro spirituals and dramatization of poems written by Black artists. Members of various churches in the County will partici pate in the program. The Rev. J.W. Gorham, presi dent of Hoke County Civic League, invites all interested persons to attend. Service Personnel Air Force Master Sgt. Fenner J. Smith. Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Willie Wells of Red Springs, is home on leave after completing a four-year assignment at Griffiss Air Force Base, N.Y. His next assignment is a 12 months tour in Korea.
