Varsities Down Pinecrest
Hoke County High School's
varsity boys and girls downed the
Pinecrest High teams last week on
the Hoke court, but the Pinecrest
JV\ turned back the Hoke JVs
7169.
Lady Eagles Win, 44-6
The Upchurch Lady Eagles de
feated the Yellow Jackets of West
Lee 44-6 February 9 in Sant'ord.
The Eagles had a low-scoring
drive in the first quarter but held
the Yellow Jackets 10-0.
The second quarter was the big
one for the Lady Eagles, scoring 21
to West Lee's 2 taking a 31-2 lead
at halftime.
The Eagles eased up the pressure
in the second half with everyone
seeing some action. The Eagles
outscored West Lee 6-4 in the third
quarter and held it scoreless in the
fourth. The Eagles were lead by T.
Hoi lings worth's 13 points followed
by J. Hunt with V. Southerland

The Eagles end their season with a
1 1 -3 record .

tional meeting February 23 at
p.m. at the Parks and Recreation

The Hoke boys won. (>9-5*). after
being one point behind at halt
time, and the Hoke girls turned
back the visiting girls 41-31 with a
third-quarter surge in an otherwise
even game.
The results brought the Bucks to
a 7-3 Southeastern Conference
record and 10-8 over-all. and the
Hoke girls to 8-2 and 13-5 marks.
The victory also left the Hoke boys
alone in second place in the
conference standings. Hoke had
shared the runnerup spot with E.E.
Smith but Smith lost 39-37 to
Lumberton the same night Hoke
was beating Pinecrest. Hoke and
Smith met Tuesday on the Hoke
court.
In the boys' game at Hoke. Greg
Hollingsworth scored 31 points for
the winners, the highest individual
total for the contest, and Hoke's
Sabrina Barnes was tops in the
girls' game with 14 points.

of Pinecrest w as top scorer with 22.
and Kevin Gay with 12 kd the
Hoke individual efforts.

In Class III Gymnastics
Hoke Girl Wins State Title
Denise Evans of Hoke County
won gold and silver medals Satur
day in the State Class III Junior
Olympics gymnastics champion
ships at Winston-Salem.
She won her gold medal (first
place) for her floor routine, and her
silver (second place) for her per
formance on the balance beam.
Miss Evans is 10 years old. the
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ray
mond Evans of West Cole Avenue
Extension, and a student in the
Fifth Grade of J.W. Turlington
School .
She is on the Class 111 team of
Sandhill Gymnastics in Southern
Pines.
Her teammates. Ashley Walker
of Pinehurst and Melanie Samuels
of Southern Pines, also placed high
in the competition. Miss Walker
won a bronze (third place) medal
for her performance on the uneven1
parallel bars, placed fifth on the
balance beam, and fourth all
around in the 12-14 years old
group.
Miss Samuels won a silver medal
on the uneven parallels in the 9-1 1
year olds groups.
The Sandhill team is ranked
third in the state.

Aggressors Lead Volleyball League

tion Commission's Ladies Volley
ball league enjoyed exciting action
on Febuary 8.
To start the night's competition,
the Hide-Aways defeated Nixon's
Misfits 15-12. and 15-11. Glenny
Stewart and Sara Norton together
gathered 15 serving points to set the
Hide-A-Ways. Nixon's Misfits were
sparked b_v Linda Ihde and Linda
Zaleshas.
In action at 7:15. Michael's
downed the Debatables 15-9 and
League Ends Regular Season
The Men's Basketball League
sponsored by the Parks and
Recreation Commission concluded
it's final week of regular season
play.
On February 8, the House of
Raeford took on the 76ers. The
House of Raeford defeated the
76ers 75-61, led by L. Miller with
17 points, C. Chandler with 16,
and W. Love with 14. The 76ers
were sparked by V. McDougald
with 18 points, M. Bratcher with
17, and M. McDougald with 16.
The second game of the week
was a real thriller that went into
triple overtime. The All Stars over
came Hollingsworth's Barbers
79-76. G. Maynor collected 35
points and R. Maynor tossed in 18
points for the All Stars. Holl
ingsworth's Barbers were led by K.
McDonald with 20 points, and L.
McBryde with 15 points.
The regular season ended with a
play-off game between the Suns
and the House of Raeford. The
Suns defeated the House of
Raeford 2-0.

The final round paired the
victorious Aggressors over the Pot
ted Plants 15-2. and 15-3. Teresa
Temple and Annette Campbell
sparked the Aggressors with 14
points. The Potted Plants received
excellent efforts from Sandra Hol
comb and Dorisene Roper.
