FERTILIZER NITROGEN USE
ON 1982 CROPS
Survival will be the key word to
farmers in 1482 as they try to hold
on until crop prices oiler thent
enough profit to repay debts and
get back to some kind of economic
stability. Farmers should take a
hard look at their operations and
correct the areas where their capital
is leaking out. An area recently
brought to my attention by Jack V.
Baird. Soil Science Specialist at
NCSU. is the use of fertilizer
Nitrogen on crops.
Fertilizer N cost is closely tied to
both ammonia and natural gas cost
because ammonia (NH3) is 82% N.
and NH3 is produced primarily
from natural gas. The timing of
natural gas price control (current
energy bill calls essentially for
decontrol of natural gas pricing in
interstate marketing by 1985) will
have a dramatic impact upon the
prices paid by U.S. producers for
natural gas used in ammonia
production. These facts undoubt
edly will increase N cost, perhaps
not in 1982. but assuredly in the
near future.
Based on available figures, more
money is spent for N than for the
combined amounts of phosphorous
and potash consumed. Therefore,
it is strongly recommended to
growers that efficient use of N
fertilizer be demonstrated.
Since 54% of the total N used in
North Carolina is applied to corn. 1
will mention some possible ap
proaches to using N more efficient
ly in corn production.
One method is to apply some
Nitrogen with the complete fertili
zer and the remainder could be
broadcasted prior to or just after
planting. With this method, the
chances are high for leaching or
denitrifieation losses of N during
the first five weeks after planting
when a relatively small amount of N
is taken up. The use of nitrification
inhibitors can reduce leaching and
denitrifieation losses. These chemi
cals. which must be soil incorporat
ed were designed to slow down the
conversion of ammonium nitrogen
to nitrate nitrogen. Dr. Kaniprath.
corn specialist at NCSU. has shown
that nitrification inhibitors will
suppress this process tor approxi
mately six weeks.
Thus during this period the
applied nitrogen is partially pro
tected from leaching on sandy soils
or from denitrification on poorly
drained or "water-logged" soils.
Another approach to N fertiliza
tion of corn is to apply a small
amount of N at planting time and
then the remainder as a side-dress
ing when corn is approximately
"knee-high". This method mini
mizes possible leaching losses and
still makes N available when corn is
rapidly developing.
With the future holding probable
increasing costs of N fertilizers,
farmers must learn and use effi
cient methods of applying this
valuable resource.
