Hoke Students Place High In Art Contests Hoke County High School stu denls won two first pi acts, three ^ seconds. and a third Saturday in "the arts and crafts competition of District 9. North Carolina Federa tion of Women's Clubs, held at Sanford. The first -place winners were Bill Scllars. in photography, and Caro line Anslcy. in decorative painting. Their wins sent them into the state competition which will be held March 20 at Salem College in Winston- Salem. Second places in the district contest were won by Linda Si/e more in art. 1 2th Grade; Lisa Jacobs, in sewing: and Moriah Colborn. in decorative painting. The winner of third place was Velyn Graham, iirurt. 12th Grade. They had advanced to the district contest by placing high in the Hoke W County High School Arts Festival competition held earlier this winter hy the Raeford Woman's Club and Kaclbrd Junior Woman's Club. Eight Students Inducted Into 1 Beta Club On February 5, the Senior Beta Club of Flora Macdonald Academy inducted eight new members. They were Lori Ann Hayes. Kathleen Louisa Henderson. Jud son Eugene Melvin, Jerral Micheal White. Elizabeth Rich Alexander. Carol Elaine Thompson. Ann ^ Amanda Lawson. and Sheila Hair w Jackson. These students maintained at least a 90 average the first semester which made them eligible tor membership in the National Beta Club. After the induction. Data Processing Training Offered Sandhills Community College is offering a series of onuses lo train people in data processing. Siudents nuist lake two basie courses, Introduction to Computer Concepts and Introduction to Flow charting. first. Both courses may he taken during one quarter. Alter completing these courses, students begin learning the pro gramming languages BASIC and COBOL.' COBOL is taught for three quarters, as it is the most commonly used language in data processing. Students will also learn RPG 11. a programming language designed for report writing. Additional instruction is pro vided in other aspects of data processing such as operating sys tems. systems analysis, and data processing math. Students are provided with "hands on" experience through use of the data processing laboratory at Sandhills. The College also recently installed a Univae system 80. a highly sophisticated mini computer. The laboratory contains 5 CRT screens for student use. and additional screens have been or dered.
