Smooth body and texture will be adversely affected. Several persons have called in to ask for care instructions for silk. The following should help you keep your silk articles looking nice. As a fashion fabric, silk should be cleaned with care. Some silks are washable w hile others are not. Care depends on the construction and finish of the fabric as well as the style of the garment in which it is used. Lined apparel, the taffetas, brocades and failles, for example, require drycleaning. Many blouses and dresses may be washed, but labels should be checked for the manufacturer's recommended treatment of the garment. Gentle care and speed are the key factors in washing. It is possible to machine wash silk If the washer has a slow agitation speed. A short wash time of about 2 minutes is also necessary to protect the dyes. Use warm water with a * detergent or soap. For hand washing, quickly swish the warm suds through the gar ment. Do not rub or twist. Rinse thoroughly and roll in a clean bath towel to remove excess moisture. Hang away from heat or sun until almost dry. Chlorine bleach should not be used on silk. Fabric softener helps to reduce static cling. When ironing, use the lowest heat setting and press the garment while it is still moist. Silk should be pressed on the wrong side. The following dishwashing pro blems and remedies may help you to keep your china and crystal bright and shiny. Problem: Gray or metal marks on ceramic dinnenvare. The situ ation can occur when a knife or fork is drawn across the surface of the dinnenvare. A gray mark is left since the dinnenvare is harder than t the metal. Remedy: Remove the marks bv gently scouring with household cleanser, stainless steel cleaner or a plastic mesh pad. Problem: Stains on cookware with a hard-coat anadic finish that is charcoal colored. Remedy: Remove stains with a plastic scouring pad. This type of cookware must be handwashed; it can be permanently damaged by Hebron To Meet The Hebron Fellowship Group will meet at 8 p.m. Saturday in the Fellowship Hall of First Baptist Church. Shorthand Class A class in shorthand began Tuesday night and will be held every Tuesday, ?-9:30 p.m.. for the next 1 1 weeks, at Hoke Countv High School. The course is offered by Sand hills Community College, and the teacher is Mrs. Wanda Ingram. The fee is $8. v ' . 1 *? > automatic dishwashing. Problem: A lilm or sireaks on glassware that may appear to be an iridescent coating. The condition can occur in a dishwasher when soft or softened water is used on soda-lime glass. The silicates in the dishwasher detergent become affix ed to the glassware. Silica film, the first stage, is a rainbow-hued or iridescent coating. Etching is the advance form of silica film; glass ware looks cloudy. Remedy: Etched glassware can not be restored but the action can be retarded, perhaps prevented by the following procedures. Use a minimum amount of dishwasher detergent necessary to clean the dishes; use a water temperature no higher than 140 degrees F; under load the dishwasher to allow for maximum rinsing; use a rinse agent to condition the surface of the water so that it will sheet off the glassware rapidly. Problem: Cooked-on foods on glass-ceramic cookware. Remedy: Use baking soda, a scouring liquid cleanser or a plastic scouring pad. Avoid scouring pads of copper, stainless steel or steel wool since they niav scratch the surface.
