4-H Club Welcomes
New Members
The Hillcrest 4-H Club enjoyed a
lively meeting on February 16. with
23 persons in attendance.
Several new members were wel
comed and encouraged to till out
Project Selection Sheets. New
record manuals were received by
old members and the new members
will receive theirs within the next
few weeks. Get to work on them
early as Achievement Night comes
early this year.
Several 4-Hers will be in Kinston
February 2t> and 2~" tor a weekend
iif fun and learning combined. You
will hear reports on these activities
at the next regular meeting of the
Hillcrest Club which will be March
15. at ":00-8:30 p.m. in the Lester
Building Conference Room.
We need to keep in mind the
upcoming workshops that pertain
to our individual activities and
make every effort to make this year
a really big year for 4-H in Hoke
County.

Hoke 4-Hers
To Attend Retreat
Hoke County 4-Hers will be
joining other youth in a 17-county
area this weekend tor a Senior Teen
Retreat.
The retreat will be held at the
Holiday Inn in Kinston February
2t> and 2?.
Those who will attend from Hoke
County are Sharon McNeill.
Tammie Hcndrix. Kim Hawkins.
Ronda latum. Laura Ward. Julie
Riley, and Sandy Lupo. Mrs. Flovd
McNeill and Ann Ross will accom
pany the group.
The retreat will open with a
banquet Friday night, when parti
cipants will hear a speaker on "You
and Energy."
The group will go skating Friday
evening.
On Saturday, the 4-Hers will
hear campaign speeches from those
running for district offices this
year.
They will participate in work
shops on "Handicap. An Over
view." "F.nergy in the Communi
ties." "Energy in the Kitchen,"
"Nutrition and Me -- How to Live
Forever." and "Light and Design:
The Energy of Photography."
The retreat concludes at 3:30
Saturday afternoon.

Riggs Running For Appeals Court
Zennie Lawrence Riggs. a Jack
sonville lawyer, is a candidate in
the Democratic primary for judge
of the North Carolina Court of
Appeals.
He is seeking the seat which will
he vacated by Robert M. Martin,
w ho is retiring.
Riggs was born in New Bern, in
1922 and lived there until his lather
died in 19.1-4. His mother then
moved lo White Oak Township.
Onslow County, where he grad
uated. as Valedictorian, from
White Oak Hijjh Sch?H>l in
He then attended the University of
North Carolina at Chapel Hill,
graduating in 1442 with a B.S. in
commerce degree. He thereafter
worked tor First Citizens Bank at
Jacksonville. N.C. Alter discharge
from the Navy in |44h he went to
Nc? Bern and worked lor Frank
Sproul. C.P.A., and obtained his
C.P.A. license. He then attended
the University <>t North Carolina
