June 1 Seen As
Primary Date
The General Assembly in its
1982 extra session adopted legisla- i
tion directing the State Board of
Elections to order 1982 primary
elections.
The legislation also directs the
state board to set the Filing period
for candidates f?r Congress, State
Senate and State House.
The state board is required to
order the primaries and filing
period based upon the date on
which the three apportionment 4
plans are approved by the U.S.
Department of Justice.
Therefore, there is no appro
priate way to predict when the
primary will be scheduled.
Unless there is practically imme
diate approval by the Justice De
partment. then it would seem
reasonable that the primary will not
be held earlier than June 1.
All wire services and other medial
representatives located in Raleigh
will be notified the instant the State
Board sets a date for the primary.
In addition, written notification
will go out to all county boards of
elections on the same date."
