Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever is caused by an organism called Rickettsia. Rickettsia and is trans mitted to man in the eastern part of the USA by the bite of the dog tick. Only a small percentage of the dog ticks carries Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. Transmission of the disease from a bite does not often occur unless the tick has been attached for more than six hours. Persons who are outdoors much of the time should wear protective clothing and check themselves frequently for ticks, paying special attention to the head. Most com mercial insect repellents are some what effective against ticks. Pesti cides such as Sevin Dust are effective when applied at a rate of two pounds of pesticide per acre. Pets should be checked fre quently. Any attached ticks should be removed. Your pets should be treated with acceptable formula tions recommended by your Veter inarian. The county Agricultural Extension Agent (875-3461) can also advise you on pesticides to use in your pets' quarters. Ticks should be removed from the skin by using tweezers and gently pulling. If this fails, use a heated needle to it until it lets go. Wash the bite area with soap and water and apply antiseptic such as alcohol. Do not squeeze the tick as its body fluids or feces may enter your skin through natural openings or microscopic breaks in skin. Destroy the tick by burning it or flushing down a commode. The onset of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever is definite and starts two days to two weeks after the tick bite. Symptoms include fever, ? 1 chills, headjicHfc, and tffuscle aches. A rash (which resembles Measles) may appear after 2-4 days of fever. The rash appears first on the wrists and ankles, spreading to arms, legs and trunk. If you should develop any of these symptoms, get in touch with your family physician. Land Bank, FmHA Sign F armer Aid Agreement C.W.S. Home, president of the Federal Land Bank and Federal Intermediate Credit Bank of Columbia, and Larry W. Godwin, North Carolina State Director of Farmers Home Administration (FmHA) announce the signing of an agreement to assist North Carolina farmers. The agreement is as follows: "It is our desire to acknowledge the contribution North Carolina farmers are making to the nation and to recognize their current financial problems arising from depressed commodity and livestock prices and economic conditions.
