Music Booster Club
F und-raising Sale Set
The Hoke County Music Booster
Club is sponsoring a Giant Rum
mage Sale to be held this Saturday,
March 20.
? The sale will be held at the
Edinborough Shopping Center
from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. In case of
rain, the sale will be held in the
Upchurch Junior High gym.
The Upchurch Chorus is in
preparation for two major musical
events this spring. Financing is
needed for both events. The chorus
needs funds to finance a trip to
Carowinds where the group will be
performing. The Upchurch Chorus
I is also in preparation for a musical
' extravaganza production of "The
Wizard of Oz" and "The Wiz"
which will be held in May. Financ
ing is needed to cover the expenses
involved in costuming the cast,
building material and paint for the
sets and many other production
necessities.
The Hoke County Music Gub
appreciates the enthusiastic sup
port shown by Hoke County's
citizens towards the club's past
projects.
The Rummage Sale will have
"something for everyone" so the
ublic is urged to come out
aturday, March 20 and show their
support for these students with
their purchases or donations.

4-H Workshop
There will be a 4-H workshop on
presenting a 4-H demonstration on
Tuesday, March 23 at 7 p.m. at the
* Lester Building (South Magnolia
Street). The workshop is open to
any youth ages 9-19 who is inter
ested in learning how to prepare
and present a demonstration on
any topic.
A demonstration is the way one
shows and tells others how to do
something or the way one shows
and tells others about something.
Demonstrations can be useful in

purchasing required equipment
needed to lower the fire rating,
which will result in home owners

level. There are about 35 different
areas that youth can enter in
demonstration competition, from
archery, foods, crafts, to horticul

stration, and video tapes of actual
state-winning demonstrations. For

Youth Dies
Of Bullet
Wound
Christopher Steven Thompson
was found dead about 3 p.m.
Sunday of a rifle bullet wound at
his home. Rt. 1, Box 198-E,
Aberdeen, the Hoke County
Sheriff's Department reported.
He had had his 16th birthday last
February 6. He was a student in a
Moore County school.
The sherifT s department report
of the investigation says the youth
wrapped part of a coat hanger
around a door knob, hooked the
other end around the trigger of a
.22 rifle, then pulled the barrel of
the rifle.
The bullet hit him in the chest.
The report says Thompson walked
out of the house to the back porch,
sat on the steps, then fell over.
A Hoke County medical ex
aminer, Dr. Robert Townsend,
called to the home, pronounced
him dead.
The sheriff* s department report
gives no reason for the boy's action.
The funeral was conducted Tues
day afternoon at Pine Hill Baptist
Church by the Rev. Harold Thomp
son, the Rev. John Brown, and the
Rev. Emery Lucas. Burial was in
the church cemetery.
Surviving are his parents, Mr.
and Mrs. Steve W. Thompson; his
brother, Timothy W. Thompson of
the home; his sister, Gina Lynn
Thompson of the home; his mater
nal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs.
Thurman Perhelth of Aberdeen;
and his paternal grandmother,
Mrs. Bessie Thompson of Aber
deen.

arrangements.

Rev. Dennis N. Caldwell will be
the guest speaker at Center Grove
Missionary Baptist Church Sun
day, March 21 , at 3:30 p.m. for the
Junior Usher Board's third anni
versary.
Caldwell has worked as a fore
man at Converse Industries in
Lumberton but is presently em
ployed with The Fayetteville Times
and Observer in Fayetteville as a
circulation manager.
He is the pastor of McCormick
Chapel Baptist Church at Duffie
Station, Red Springs, and Oak Hill
Baptist Church in Wagram.
He teaches piano and has written
a book for beginners. As a song
writer he has also appeared on TV
with the late Mahalia Jackson, and
has played for Shirley Casear,
Charles Taylor of the Taylor
Singers and others. He has trained
and directed numerous choirs,
from New York to South Carolina.
He makes his home in Hope
Mills and is married to Cassie
Caldwell. They have one daughter,
Cassandra, 10.
The public is invited to the
Sunday program.
Hoke High Chorale which will tour Washington, D C.
Hoke High Chorale To Tour Capital
The Hoke High Chorale will tour
Washington, D.C., on March 18,
19, and 20.
The first day in Washington the
group will tourthe F.B.I. Building,
visit the National Archives Build
ing, and attend a dinner theatre in
the evening.
The second day will consist of a
visit to the National Cathedral and
tour the U.S. Capitol. The high
light of the trip will be a perfor
mance at the Pentagon.
After the performance the stu
dents will continue to Ford's
Theatre, and Arlington Cemetery,
and make a night trip to the
illuminated Memorials. The last
day the group will complete their
tour with visits to the White House
and Smithsonian Institute.
The members of the chorale
would like to thank the people of
Hoke County whose generous sup
port helped to make this trip
possible.

Hoke High Chorus, Chorale 'Superior'
On Friday, March 12. the Hoke
High Chorus and Chorale partici
pated in the Large Choral Festival
Eastern District 3 at Methodist
College in Fayetteville.
Approximately 26 other groups
performed.
The Chorus performed Grade V
music ? "The Stars are with the
Voyager" by Bright and "Ein
Hennlein Weiss" by Scandello.
The Chorale performed two
pieces by Thompson "Choose
Something Like Star" and
"Glory to God' in the Highest,"
which is Grade VI music.
Both groups rated a Superior.
