CLIFF BLUE . . . People & Issues WAGES ... In the past, workers in big industries have been receiving yearly wage hikes. This year the situation may be different if the huge Ford Motor Company is to be followed. Certanly, Federal wages should have no wholesale increase; in fact, Reagan should oppose any in crease for government workers, and lead the way back to "normal ly", which was a government slogan after World War 1. TOM GILMORE . . . Former Rep. Tom Gilmore appears to have done a good job blunting the legislative drive for four year terms. A majority of the Tar Heel legislators voted for the measure, but now we hear of no one suppor ting the measure! The bill, enabling a governor to serve two successive four year terms, should be abolished, but it will take a State Constitutional amendment to do so. Governor Hunt has made a good governor, but not every governor may be as straight forward and dedicated to what is best in the future as is Jim Hunt. The two four-year terms for governor should be repealed; and the proposed four year terms for the legislators should be killed by the people in the next general elec tion. DARE COUNTY ... We observe in The Coastland Times that three public officials, pictured standing in the court room will soon be retiring. They are Sheriff Frank Cahoon. Superior Court I Clerk. Chauncey S. Meekins and Superior Court Judge George M. Fountain. All three are retiring at the end of their present terms of office. Judge Fountain will have completed 30 years on the bench; Meekins will be completing an as tounding 56 years of service and Sheriff Cahoon will have served 30 years; the service of the three representing a century and a | quarter. These men are to be con gratulated for their years of ser vice. 1 can remember when Judge Fountain and "ye scribe" were in the YDC together, many years ago. ?ESCALATING RATES!... Lots of people are concerned about the escalating phone and electric rates in recent months and years; when many people are being laid off. ^ On the other hand, we suspect that almost everyone has noticed that gasoline prices have been eas ing down during the last few weeks. We can remember when gasoline was 20' per gallon! ROBERT MORGAN . . . Former United Stales Senator Robert Morgan of Buies Creek has returned to Harnett where he will share the Lillington office of the firm of Robert H. (Bob) Jones. ' Other members of the firm are James M. Johnson, Robert C. Bryan and Dwight W. Snow. All are well-known Harnett attorneys. Morgan said he would continue to maintain close ties with the Raleigh firm. From what we read in the papers he could be setting up for another run for the United States Senate; where he served for six years. HELMS . . . We notice that I Senator Helms has come out for the sale of tremendous acreage of land, which the United States government owns. Helms says that the U.S. Government owns land that could be sold for enough to pay off the national debt! If so, I am for it. Then we should move towards a constitu tional amendment for a balanced budget, except in case of war or ( dire emergency. If Senator Helms is correct in his statement, he should push Presi dent Reagan and Congress to sell the land, pay off the national debt and get back to sane living! BELK. . .We understand that John Belk is seriouslv considering running for governor in 1984. Belk is a member of the Belk Stores family which has stores throughout North Carolina and | beyond. HOOVER ADAMS WRITES... "With all the scandals, bid rigging and other forms of corruption swirling about the State Highway Commission during the past year or so, it seems incredible that anybody in that organization would even suggest that the rules of ethics for that department should be loosened." writes Editor ^ Hoover Taft in the Dunn Dispatch. Another item that came over the news on the TV was that state employees might not get a raise in the upcoming year. Now this has been something I have been think ing ever since they have been talking about inflation coming down. There will be no cost of living increase, if the cost of living is coming down.
