Five Burlington Employees Retire Robert D. Sands The Raeford Plant of Burlington Industries recently had five long service employees retire within a few weeks of each other. Each of these retirees had over 25 years service with the company and received an engraved retirement plaque and Bible. Two recently reached milestones in their employment histories (30 and 35 years) and received addi tional gifts. The retired employees are: Robert D. Sands - 25 years, maintenance technician; Lois Scar boro - 30 years, backwinder tender; Harry L. McMinis ? 31 years, maintenance technician; Elizabeth R. Maples Foreign Problems Discussions Set "Great Decisions '82." the U.S. Foreign Policy Associaiton's annual discussion program of current worldwide topics, will be offered at the Hoke County Library each Wednesday March 1 7- May is. from 10 a.m. to 1 1 :45 a.m. The discussion leaders will be retired Ambassadors Max Krebs of Jackson Springs and Findley Burns of Southern Pines, and Talmadge Lancaster, former head of the Tehran American school, now superintendent of Samarkand Manor at Eagle Springs. People planning to attend may register at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the library. The registration fee is S8 for anyone under age t>5 and none for those 65 or older. Each discussion period will cover a different subject. The subjects are related to Central American. Wes tern Europe. American defense. Club Group Gives Books To School The Raeford Junior Woman's Club Education Department gave five children's books to the McLauchlin School Library March 9. The books are: "Look at Me Now!" a Golden Book in coopera tion with the Menniger Foundation for solving problems of childhood; "What Is A Flower?" a child's Golden Science Book, a simple in troduction to flowering plants; "Smokey Beards Camping Book," forest lore, safety tips, and out door fun for young campers and especially beneficial for fire prevention; "The A to Z No-cook Cookbook," a Golden Cook Book for the experimenting teacher and child; no stoves or ovens; and "The One Word Storybook," a Golden Book for children, totally for fun. Crime Control Puppet Shows Given The "Good News Gang" of the State Department of Crime Control and Public Safety gave programs for the students of South Hoke and West Hoke schools March 9. The pictures were taken at the South Hoke program, during the immediately after it ended. The program, sponsored by the Hoke County 4 H clubs and the state department, told the young sters. The youngsters were told by puppets and a "live" person about the laws concerning shoplifting and vandalism and the importance of making records of their bicycles and other personal property in case they are stolen. Among the visitors was McGruff, the "crime biter dog" of the state department's television crime prevention advertisements. Mc GrutT went through the audience, shaking hands (the children's) with paws (his), in his familiar hat. trench coat and long pants. The puppets were handled by Betty East, Connie Lenckus and Linda Griffin, and the "live" person who spoke to the audience was Sue Harris. The programs at the two schools were sponsored by the Hoke County 4-H clubs and the state depart ment. Hoke Senior To Be Honored Stephanie Scriven, a Hoke County High School senior, has been selected the Tutor of the Month of March. She will receive a certificate from the Hoke County Reading SOCIALS - Literacy Council, naming her to this honor.
