Heart Fund Tournament Opens April 12 Here
The Hoke Tennis Association
will hold the Heart Fund Tourna
ment as part of the Sixth annual
North Carolina Heart/North
western Bank Statewide Tennis
Tournament.
The Hoke tournament will be
played at McLauchlin Park with
first rounds to start April 12. and
final rounds April 18.
Events being offered to associa
tion members are:
Progressive: men's and women's
singles and doubles; men's and
women's age 35 singles and
doubles, men's and women's age 45
singles and doubles, mixed doubles
and mixed age 45 doubles.
Special: men's and women's
singles and doubles, and mixed
"B" doubles, and junior boys' and
girls' singles with age divisions
complying with USTA regulations.
Matches will consist of best two -
of - three sets, with the 12 - point tie
- breaker in effect at six - games -
all in all sets. Players should bring
balls to their matches, since the
tournament is a fund - raising
activity for the heart association.

picked up at the County Parks and
Recreation office.
The deadline for receipt of
entries is 5 p.m. April 7.
Fees of S10 per person for singles
and $10 per team for doubles are
contributions to the Heart Fund.

Blazers Win Exhibition Opener
What a way to build your ego for
the first baseball season -- winning
the first exhibition game.
That's what the Hoke County
Blazers did Saturday as they visited
Ft. Bragg. A score of 10-7 brought
smiles and determination to a lot of
guys and a proud coach. Jimmie
Conoly.
On Sunday, the Blazers were
host to the Ft. Bragg team. As
excitement arose from spectators
out to see the team play, Mark
Madden sparked an out-of-the
field home run. Even though the
Blazers lost to the Ft. Bragg
Dragons 5-6. a day of enjoyment
was had by all.
The blazers will open their
regular season April 3 at 3 p.m.
against Eureka Springs. The mem
bers of the Blazers include: Bruce
Hurst, Raschod Rahmann, Don
Woods, Jerry Lowery, Sandy Mans
field, Carlton Locklear, Mike

also known as the Hoke County
Blazers, are asked to attend a
meeting to be held March 23 at 7
p.m. at the Parks and Recreation
office on West Elwood Avenue.
The Blazers are getting ready
start their first season and need
support from Hoke County and her
citizens.
Hoke Track Team Third In Opener
The Hoke High boys' track team
opened its season on a sour note,
finishing third in a recent tri
angular meet.
E.E. Smith won it with "5 points.
Douglas Byrd was runnerup with
59. Hoke scored 44.
Hoke's Paul Hint started off" the
season the way he finished last
year: winning the mile and two
mile runs.
Douglas Cromartie of Hoke also
won. finishing first in the discus
with a throw of 132 feet J 4 inches.
Teammate Ricky McNeill finished
second in the 100-meter dash and
second in the 200-meter dash.
Hoke's Edward Watson. Willie
Bridges and Ronnie MeRoc fin
ished second in events, and McKoe
placed third in the mile rnn.
Even though the Bucks lost,
there were several good prospects

relay team finished second, and all
are good prospects for finishing
well in the conference meet. The
mile relay team's lime was 3:42.2.

4-H Horse Conference Thursday
An area 4-H horse conference
will be held on Thursday, March
25, from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the
Cumberland County office
building in Fayetteville.
Dr. Bob Mowrey will discuss
nutrition and feedstuff selection,
nutrient requirements, and menu
selection from 4-5 p.m.
From 5-6 p.m, Dr. John Corn
well will talk on care of the bred
mare, early signs of foaling, the
foaling process, and care of the
newborn foal.
Dr. Garrett will discuss parasite
control, vaccination schedules and
preventative medicine 7-8 p.m.
There will be a panel discussion

season tournament starting at noon
Saturday. March 20. in Red
Springs.
On Sunday. March 21, begin
ning at noon. Hoke County will
host the final games at the Hoke
County High School baseball field.

Heart Northwestern Bank State
Tennis Championships, which will
be held July 22-25 in Chapel Hill at
the Chapel Hill Tennis Club and
the University of North Carolina.
Membership in the USTA is not
required in local tournaments but
will be required at the Cham
pionships. All matches in the
Championships will count toward
state rankings.
"B" events are being offered in
addition to progressive events so
that beginners and advanced be
ginners can compete on their own
level of play.
Northwestern Bank is sponsoring
the Statewide Tournament for the
fourth consecutive year as a public
service, recognizing that funds
raised in local tournaments help
reduce premature deaths and dis
ability from all forms of heart
disease, the nation's and North
Carolina's Number One killer.
