TAX LAWS
Our tax laws say it's up to the
individual to prove his returns are
correct. So play it safe by keeping a
copy of your income tax returns
and all supporting information.
Generally additional tax can be
assessed only up to three years after
the tax return date -- so you'll want
to save your returns at least that
long.
However, if you fail to report
one-fourth of your gross income for
any one year, the IRS can assess
taxes up to six years after that
return was due.
Arts , Crafts
It's not certain whether the
annual Arts and Crafts Exhibit at
Sandhills Community College
ushers in spring, or vice versa, but
the two events do seem to go
together.
The ninth year of the exhibit is
set for the weekend of March 27
and 28 in SCC's Student Hall.
The free exhibit and programs
are sponsored by the Continuing
Education Department to showcase
the work of their students and
instructors. The exhibit hours are
1:30-5 p.m. on Saturday and
Sunday.
Special activities for Saturday
In the case of a fradulent return,
or one that wasn't filed, the IRS
can assess and collect taxes at any
time.
And you can lose benefits from
tax options, such as income
averaging, if you don't have your
tax returns for the past four years.
TAX TIME TRAUMA
Although April 15 is tax time,
you can save money by being tax
conscious all year round.
Start by keeping records of the
items you buy that will be de
ductible on next year's return.
These might include medical ex
penditures. contributions and in
terest payments. Other possible
Exhibit
will include a performance at 2
p.m. by singers from the Senior
Citizens Center in West End, led by
Barbara Kerr. At 2:30 the Sand
hill Cloggers will present their
fancy footwork for the crowd.
On Sunday at 2 p.m. the sewing
classes will present a fashion show,
displaying their work with over
forty outfits. At 3 p.m. the
dulcimer class will present a recital,
and at 3:30 the Sandhills Cloggers
will perform again.
The classes of more than 70
instructors will have displays of
more than thirty types of arts and
crafts. The public is invited to this
free exhibit.
College News
The Dean's List for the Fall
Quarter at Sandhills Community
College was recently released.

The following Raeford students
are members of the Dean's List:
Angela T. Adams. Donna S.
Bounds. Alice W. Cancro, Vicky
R. Clark. Susan K. Davis. Luanne
M. Dees. Vicki T. Hendrix. David
A. Jones, Merlin H. Jones. Linda J.

J. Postel, John D. Smith. Joy S.
Smith, and Robert W. Zeliff.
Two Hoke County students have
been named to the Dean's List at
East Carolina University.

Mr. and Mrs. Lamon Bruner of

Single Parents
The Sandhills Single Parents
Association will meet April 7 at
Brownson Memorial Presbyterian
Church. Indiana Avenue. Southern
Pines.
A business session and a pro
gram will be held.
More information can be ob
tained bv calling G. Crews. 875

deductibles are property, telephone
or sales taxes. Then keep a big
envelope or box handy so every
member of the family can help
collect those records.
Also make sure you know the
requirements for supporting de
pendants who might count as
exemptions on your income tax
return. These might include elderly
parents or older children who are
working or attending college. Be
sure you have records for the
" support you are claiming and that
you provide the amount required by
law.
Another tax-saving technique is
to adjust your income to benefit
from a lower taxable income. You
might want to check into IRA's or
deferred tax annuities. Or if you'rfc
self-employed, you might have
some income postponed until 1983,
thereby lowering this year's income
tax. If your income is irregular or
varies a lot from year-to-year, try
income averaging. Some investors
sell stock or other assets to benefit
from tax breaks. Whether the sale
is a loss or gain, there may be
special tax benefits. Self-employed
persons and others with income
largely from investments should
begin anticipating total income
early in the fall and make necessary
adjustments by the end of De
cember.
If you're concerned about the
amount of income taxes you're
required to pay. keep up-to-date
with changing tax laws. And. for
the most direct Savings of all. keep
good records and learn to file your
own return.
