PLANT FOR WILDLIFE TOO!
Along with other spring plant- k
ing, now is the time to plant for a
crop of wildlife too! Properly
managed, game can be an annual
crop to be harvested each year
during the legal hunting seasons.
In many situations this annual crop
can be increased by management
techniques which supplement na
tural food and cover. Quail, rab
bits, doves, deer, and wild turkeys
all will use and benefit from
plantings of appropriate food and ^
cover species. Plantings can usually *
be made in places like small
openings or roads and trails in the
forest, or along edges between field
and forest - land which is usually
otherwise unproductive.
Get advice on what and where to
plant in your situation from a
wildlife biologist or through your
local Extension office. Information
is also available there on sources of
planting materials, some of which }
are furnished free of charge from
the North Carolina Wildlife Re
sources Commission.
