Kirian Tiling Company of Marion. S.C., has been installing corrugated plastic drain tile on several Hoke County farms. Working through the Hoke Soil and Water Conservation District, a meeting was held in January be tween farmers and tile contractor to coordinate a bulk rate arrange ment. Presently over 80,000 feet of tile has been installed on Earl Hendrix, Edgar Edens, Lacy Hendrix, John son Farm and Bobby Gibson farms. Most footage is installed on a grid pattern with the intent of reversing the tile for subsurface irrigation by using a water control structure in the outlet ditch and impounding water back into the tile lines. This practice of "subirri gation" has been used quite ex tensively in the Southeastern States with positive-yield results. Compared to conventional sprinkler irrigation, "subirri gation" provides a substantial yield response at only a fraction of the cost. The key to this system is water table control to reduce the need for pumped water, utilizing spring rains. "Subirrigation" is a very im portant facet of "Total Water Management", a high priority of Hoke County's Soil and Water Conservation needs for years to come. .
