Woman, Her 10 Children Lose Home To Fire Fire destroyed the trailer home of a woman and her 10 children about 1 p.m. March 28. The mobile home stood at the end of a new street off Rockfish Road about four miles north of Raeford. Hillcrest Fire Chief Ed McNeill credited the oldest of the children, Calvin Graham. 15. with saving the lives of the eight who were in the trailer with him when he discovered the Fire. McNeill said the boy got out of bed when he discovered the blaze and got the others out of the mobile home in time. McNeill said the mother, Mary Helen Braddy. was at a washerette with the other child when the Fire broke out. The youngest of her children is 8. He said none of the children were injured but the family dog was killed by the fire, smoke, or superheated air before it could be brought out of the home. McNeill said the trailer was owned by John D. Austin, and Mrs. Braddy had been renting it. He said the Fire started in a wall plug. Eighteen Hillcrest Firemen be sides McNeill answered the alarm, and were helped greatly. McNeill said, by water brought in a tank by Hoke ASCS ' 1982 FARM PROGRAMS John J. Cooper, state executive director. North Carolina Agricul tural Stabilization and Conserva tion Service, said the 1982 farm programs and the grain reserve will work to raise grain prices but only if farmers use the programs. The feed grain and wheat acreage reduction programs will reduce the amount of grain har vested this year. The grain reserve -- if farmers use it - will reduce the amount of surplus grain on the market. Cooper said if enough farmers use the acreage reduction and reserve programs, farm prices will increase. Program anticipation is voluntary. However, only those farmers who sign up will be eligible for price support loans, target prices and the reserve pro gram. Farmers who sign up may change their plans up to the time they report their acreage. The deadline for Filing an inten tion to participate is April 16. May 7 No-till corn and soybeans pro ducers wishing cost-share assis tance by way of the ASCS Admin istered Agricultural Conservation Program should file their ap plication no later tan May 7. The no-till method of planting has proven quite useful in reducing soil erosion from water and wind. Interested producers should con tact the local ASCS Office.
