"Things That
Matter"
by Lucien Coleman
ft "CAN T TAKE THESE
w LONELY NIGHTS"
On the Mississippi Gulf Coast a
few days ago, I picked up a
newspaper that had some interest
ing personal ads in the classified
section.
One went like this: "White
widow, 75, seeks charming male
companion, 25 to 40, free to travel
at my expense. Experience with
toheelchair, insulin injections help
Tul."
And another: "Tall, handsome,
Irish/Mexican gentleman bache
lor. Love friendship with a sensitive
intelligent woman to 45. (Prefer
outdoor type, but not necessary if
you can cook!) No time for bar
hoppers, hopheads or heavy
weights. Social drinking and Cig.
smoking OK. Can stand the lonely
days, but can't take these lonely
flights."
? There was a particularly plain
tive note in this one: "White male,
21, 5* 11", 165 lbs., wishes to meet
attractive women 19-25. Loves
outdoors and indoor sports. I need
some companionship. Please an
swer."
And so the ads went, six columns
of them. And one common theme
ran through all of them. Loneli
ness. A hunger for relationship
Bkith somebody. With anybody.
It's incredible how ipanv lonely
people there are. Even people who
live their lives surrounded by other
people. Paul Tournier, a Swiss
psychiatrist, once told of a woman
who worked for an international
organization. People came and
went all day long in her office. But
she had no friends and seldom went
out of the building where she
worked and lived. In her room at
flight, she always turned on her
radio before going to bed, just to
hear the sound of a human voice --
the announcer's - say, "And now I
bid you a pleasant good night."
Those who are acquainted with
the scene at singles bars (I am not)
will tell you that some of the
loneliest people in the world join
the milling crowds there night after
night.
^ Psychologists say that such
^people are lonely because they have
never learned to be alone, with
themselves. Strange as it sounds,
they can't relate to others, because
they can't relate to themselves.
They don't know themselves. They
don't trust, themselves. They don't
like themselves. And until they do
something about that, they will go
on placing ads, hoping that some
body out there will answer.
?FAT ISN'T FUNNY ANYMORE
Well, I'm into it again. The
battle of the bulge. Fifty years old
and fifty pounds overweight. That's
where I found myself a week ago.
It was that movie on cable
television, I think. The comedy
about a fat guy who couldn't stop
eating. A funny comedy. But I
^idn't laugh. And my wife didn't
Pbugh. That's because the fat guy
was sitting by her. Eating popcorn.
Now, five days later, I'm just 41
pounds overweight. That's right.
Nine pounds off in just five days.
And I am now about to reveal my
secret diet. Just stop eating.
I don't mean stop things like
doughnuts, popcorn, buttered
rolls, mashed potatoes and gravy,
pizza, icecream, and Heath bars. I
mean stop eating. Period. Not a
?jiorsel of solid food has passed my
lips for five days. And, to my great
surprise, I'm still breathing.
It's the ultimate diet. No calorie
counting. No need to measure
portions or buy expensive exotic
foods like hummingbird filets. No
lying awake at night wondering if
you ate more than your daily quota
of watermelon seeds. Fasting is the
simple, clean way to do it.
^ There's another advantage, too.
Going without food keeps me from
tempting my stomach. When it
comes to eating, I have just two
speeds / all the way on and all the
way off. I can go all day without
food and have just a few hunger
pangs. But just let me put a morsel
or two down the hatch and my
whole gastronomical system starts
snarling and snapping for more.
It's a little like throwing a piece of
bloody beef to sharks. Doing
Without is easier.
I suppose I'll break my fast in a
day or two, though. I keep re
membering that fellow who boasted
to all his neighbors that he was
training his mule to do without
food. His technique was to reduce
the quantity a little each day.
Finally, just before he got the mule
completely trained, the poor beast
_$iied.
