helpful program on Water Con
servation. There were devices also
shown and demonstrated that can
be used to conserve and increase
( efficiency with less water use. After

journed, refreshments were served
by the hostess and a social hour

sympathy to Mrs. Bruce Turner
Sr. m the death of her mother.
Mrs. Lucy B. Beach, who died
unexpectedly. Friday April 23 in
Macon Georgia. Funeral service
was Monday April 26. interment

released Tuesday of last week and
is convalescing at home.

of Lumber Bridge, Mrs. Pauline
Kennedy of Fayetteville, and son.
Rev. Donald E. Kennedy, Mrs.
Kennedy and infant daughter.
Racquet Joy of Guadalhara,
Mexico visited Mr. and Mrs. Amos
Grant, Jr. and family the past
Sunday. Rev. Kennedy is doing
Missionary work in Mexico and
after a few months sabbatical leave
he and his family will return to
Mexico to continue his mission
duty.
Mr. and Mrs. Worth Wood of
Hope Mills and Mr. and Mrs.
Robert Wood visited Mr. and Mrs.
Carl Pemberton and family the past
weekend. Mrs. Pemberton has
been right sick for several weeks.
Mrs. Carolyn Durham, daughter
of Mrs. Marie Fowler who is a
student of Nursing and member of
Ligma Theta Tau sorority at North
Carolina State University at Chapel
Hill was inducted into the National
Honor Society Sunday, May 2 at
the school. Mrs. Fowler and daugh
ter, Miss Cathy Fowler, attended
the ceremony. Mrs. Durham has
completed her Masters program in
nursing and will be awarded her
degree May 16.
Am happy to report that Eric
Wood is getting along real well.
Mrs. Wood is getting along very
well also. Their daughter, Mrs.
Betty Jean Trost of St. Pauls.
Minnesota has returned home after
an extended visit with them be
cause of Mr. Woods illness.
Mrs. Jessie Livingston of Arabia
visited Mr. and Mrs. David Gib
son, Mrs. Henrietta Tanner, Mrs.
Alice Allen and Mrs. Marie Fowler
the past week.
Mr. and Mrs. Harold Boyles of
the Antioch Community visited
Mrs. Boyles' sister, Mrs. Elvira
Carson the past Sunday.
Mrs. Alfred Berry and grandson,
Ralph Cecil of the Antioch Com
munity visited relatives in New
Bern the past week.
Mrs. D.A. Berry's father, Riley
Willis of Raeford is getting along
very well.
There is no change in Randy
Sheppard's condition. He is still in
a deep coma from an automobile
accident he was in April 20. He is
the son of Mr. and Mrs. Willie
Sheppard of Aberdeen and nephew
of Mrs. E.T. Brock, Jr. He is also
brother to infant daughter, "Baby
Abby" Sheppard who has had a
series of operations and is sche
duled for another Tuesday May 4.
The Sheppards have two children
in critical condition in intensive
care in Moore Memorial Hospital
in Pinehurst and request prayer for
them.
May we be mindful of the many
who are ill and troubled among us,
and keep them in our thoughts and
prayers.
Cultural Arts Activities Continue
The Hoke County schools' cul
tural arts activities for May and
June continue next week.
They opened Tuesday with a
performance by the J.W. Turling
ton School Chorus, directed by
Jane Davis, at a Senior Citizens
Luncheon Meeting at Raeford
United Methodist Church; and a
concert by the Hoke High School
Band, directed by Jimmy James, at
Hoke High's MacDonald Gym that
night.
The 82nd Airborne Division
Chorus was to give a concert
Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at J.W.
Turlington School.

Rescue Squad Answered
36 Calls In April
The Hoke County Rescue Squad
in April made 36 calls.
The members transported two
patients and gave eight first aid on
the scene.
Eleven of the calls were for
highway accidents involving per
sonal injury and six for highway
accidents involving property dam
age. One was for a house fire, one
for a woods fire, three for house
calls, one for a heart-attack victim,
six for public service.
Seven special programs and
demonstrations were given for the
public .
During the month, also, mem
bers served 121.21 hours in service
and the vehicles traveled 700.9
miles and used 138.4 gallons of gas.

Mikki Freeze Wins State Award
Mikki Freeze, a Hoke County
High School senior, received the
Youth Council's of North Carolina
Chairman's Award Saturday as the
senior judged Most Dedicated and
Most Helpful to the State Youth
Council.
She was announced as the winner
during the State Youth Council
meeting at Ft. Caswell Friday and
Saturday.

March Sales Tax
Collections Higher
Collections of the Hoke County
one per cent sales tax in March
netted $28,020.03.
Collections the month before
netted $26,756.76, and in March
1981 the net totaled $27,705.27.
Miss Freeze will keep the award
plaque a year, then turn it over to
next year's winner.
Miss Freeze has served on the
state council for three years and is a
member of the Hoke County Youth
Council. She is the daughter of
Mrs. Oleta Lopez of Raeford.
The state council's elections and
the Board of Directors' meeting
were held during the weekend.

the meeting by four other members

The Chairman's Award recipient
is elected by vote of the members of
the state council's Executive Board.
