Farm Focus by Richard Melton Extension Livestock Agent Banks Wannamaker Extension Field Crops Agent LIVESTOCK MANAGEMENT Creep feeding is a practice surrounded with a great deal of controversy and misunderstanding. The controversy comes from the fact that many people say it is not economical to creep feed. Well, that depends on the type of animal being fed and the type of creep being provided. The misunderstanding results in when exactly is a creep feed or a creep ration used with young animals. Generally speaking, a creep ration is feed to an animal starting as a pre-weaning diet. According to test results weight can be put on a young animal more efficiently through a creep ration than through its mother's milk. That is especially important close to wean ing. Bv then the amount ol nutrients taken in by the young animal from its mother is less than needed. So the young animal needs some supplemental source of energy and nutrients if it is to reach its potential. That is where a creep ration comes in. Such a ration has several im portant characteristics. First, it must taste good. Usually molasses is added to most creep rations for that purpose. Second, it should be very high in amino acid and energy content. These factors are im portant to the young growing animal. . They provide a big part of the materials needed for growth, which at that time are lacking in its mother's milk. Finally, the third important characteristic is that the ration be very digestible. That is because young animals have very small gut capacities and cannot break-down very fibrous or com lex feeds. . Creep feeding is practiced with cattle, swine, and horses in this area. Swine and horses usually are given a concentrate creep teed. Cattle are usually given corn as a creep ration. A practice recently being adopted by some cattle producers is pasture creeping. In it calves are provided access to a high qualitv forage crop. I hat torage crop serves as their creep teed. In closing I would like to say that creep feeding is a tool available to producers. The decision to creep feed or not depends on the pro ducer and his or her operation. In making that decision the producer must weigh many factors, a couple of which I've touched on here. Only then can a rational decision be made. ? * ? BEES AND PESTICIDES Recent legislation by the General Assembly has meant changes in the North Carolina Pesticide Law. The major changes in the law dealt with responsibility of notification of beekeepers with registered apiaries and the time in which the bee keeper must be notified. Under the amended law aerial applicators and the person who contracts lor the aerial application are responsible for notifying bee keepers who have a registered apiary within one-half mile of an area to be sprayed with bee-toxic pesticides. That notification must be given by phone, mail, or in person no more than 10 days and no less than 24 hours before the pesticide is applied. It is especially important that beekeepers note that only apiaries registered with the North Carolina Department of Agriculture are covered by the law . God bless you all. Frances Walter. 2P Thursday, May 6, 1982 Read 2 Corinthians 5: 19-6:7 A friend whom I loved designed bridges, a vocation to which he devoted himself with single-minded intensity. For one such effort, he was mentioned in a prestigious publication, a sort of "who's who in bridge-builders." My friend died last year. Because I miss him so. he came to mind at once when, while traveling recently. I crossed a beautiful bridge. I couldn't help thinking how we all can design bridges to span the needs in human relationships. In a world made small by technology, the human condition is essentially unchanged. We who call ourselves Christians have an unsurpassed opportunity? no. an obligation-to design bridges of empathy, con cern, love, and unselfish sharing to members of God's family both far and near. If we devoted ourselves unreservedly to that task, God's record of who's who in bridge builders would be large indeed. And the peace on earth that God promised could become a glorious reality! PRAYER: O God. mender of broken relationships, show us how to be agents of Your reconciliation. In Jesus' name. Amen.
