Background Scripture: Revelation 6 through 7 Devotional Reading: ^ 1 Peter 1:3-9 My son. Todd, called me yester day from work to tell me that A Man For All Seasons would be "the late movie" for last evening. Inas much as 1 had already seen the stage play on Broadway and the motion picture at least twice, I had not the slightest intention of staying up to see it again, for I am no longer a "late nighter." ^ Nevertheless, I did just that. ^Intending to watch just the first few minutes, I quickly found myself engrossed in the depiction of Sir Thomas More and his Christian martyrdom. Once again I watched the story of this gifted man who neither sought to be a hero nor a martyr and eventually personified both. Again I was struck with the timeliness of his dilemma for he was not challenged to give up his ^Christian faith, but simply to Compromise a little. In the drama we see him struggling to maintain both his integrity and his relationship with King Henvy VIII. whom he served as Chancellor. All he would need to do. as family, friends, and foe alike reminded him. was to agree with the King's plan to terminate his marriage with Queen Catherine. Many were claiming that the ^marriage had never been legal in the first place, let alone moral. According to the drama. More desperately wanted to accommo date himself to this demand. In time, however, it becomes obvious that he simply cannot without forfeiting his very soul. The most poignant ?cene is that when his family is allowed to visit him in prison, all knowing that, unless he relents, it will be the last time they will see each other. They demand, they plead: You to proven your point, Thomas More; we've all suffered enough; sign the king's paper and come home to us! With all his heart. More wants to give in to them, wants to survive. But he cannot. God speaks to him more loudly and clearly than even those whom he loves. So on a warm July morning in 1535, Sir Thomas More, a kindly yet determined Christian man. was executed in the Tower of London and thus earned his white robe. In John's great revelation he saw an immeasurable multitude who stood before the Lamb "clothed in white robes." "Who are these, clothed in white robes, and whence have they come?" John is asked in his vision. And the answer that is given for him: "These are they who have come out of the great tribula tion; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb." (7:13, 14). None of us are likely to be called to martyrdom for our faith today, but. like Sir Thomas More, we may be challenged to remain loyal to Christ at the price of some personal cost, be it great or small. Like him. we may not feel cut-out to be heroes or martyrs, but. as he did. we are called to remain loyal to Christ and pay the price of our hoped-for white robes. From the Superintendent's Desk by Raz Autry Florence Cohen I had been the principal of Hoke County High School only a short time when 1 was assigned an ESEA Title 1 Reading teacher. When 1 found out the teacher was a Yankee 1 wondered how in the World I was supposed to put up with consolidating the three ?races into one high school and get to understand a Yankee. This Yankee taught me a lot of things and 1 learned to love her as a fine human being. Her intelligence is superior. Her understanding of youngsters was demonstrated as only a superior teacher could demonstrate. It mat tered not where they came from - a tobacco patch or a city street. She only saw their needs and taught _them as only a superior teacher can ^each. She loved them as one who understand from whence they came. When 1 became superintendent 1 gave a call and she responded. I like to think I was wise enough to Contest t (Continued from page I) bley, Wesley G. Miller. James Plummer. Juanita Edmund, clerk of Superior Court, and Coroner Frank Crumpler are unopposed for reelec tion. Around Town (Continued from page I) ^The final filing date is now over and we should soon have the names of all the candidates so that we can print them in the paper. Maybe you don't know, but people can file for elective position, according to what they are, in Raleigh, Raeford, Fayetteville; Lumberton and to any precinct official. So you see it will be after the names are compiled and sent to the election office, before we will ^tnow all the names. recognize one who had something to contribute to all. She fulfilled every expectation I had of her. She stood tall with the disappointments and did not gloat over the suc cesses. If any one individual can be given credit for the vast improve ment of our childrens academic ad vances, it would be Florence Cohen. Florence would be the first one to tell you that it takes a joint ef fort. A team effort. A team effort needs a leader and she was the leader. Mrs. Cohen is leaving us for new adventures. She and her soon-to be-retired husband. Col. George Cohen, have bought the Bordeaux Dinner Theater. Florence has always been greatly interested in, and involved in, acting. Besides, she is the type of individual who needs new worlds to conquer. I am saddened that Mrs. Cohen is leaving us, but I rejoice in having had her services for our children for so long. 1 am not only losing a Director of Instruction, 1 am being separated from a friend. Although our friendship will continue, I will miss the everyday association. Thank you Florence, for your service to our children. I thank God that He let you pass our way...
