West Hoke School Celebrates Spring Holiday
Friday, May 14, was no ordinary
day for the principal, faculty, staff
and students of West Hoke School.
The long, awaited day of excite
ment and anticipation had arrived.
Everyone was at shcool the usual
time; but there was something
different about the movement of
the students, the facial expressions;
even the tone of voices.
Teachers were moving quickly
here and there, parents and
patrons were going in and out of
the building, staff members were
busy completing non routine tasks.
As the minutes passed, the activity
became more and more wide
spread.
Cafeteria workers were preparing
bag lunches, teacher assistants
were directing students toward the
front lawn as they (the students)
carried chairs; the members of the
Upchurch Junior High School
Band unloaded the bus; and the
beautifully decorated royal plat
form (with flowers of all sizes,
shapes and colors) awaited the
royal party. It was time for MAY
DAY EXTRAVAGANZA! ;
Suddenly, it seemed as if time
stood still. It was the ninth hour.
As the Upchurch Junior High
School Band began to play (under
the direction of Jimmy James)
stately King Lewis and vivacious
Queen Holly, followed by the
handsome Prince Rodney and
lovely Princess Amy, led the
Royalty to the throne as approxi
mately 250 spectators of parents,
patrons and friends watched.
Milton Williams, principal, ex
tended the welcome and crowned
the king, queen, prince and prin
cess. "Die king and prince also
received a scepter; while the queen
and princess received a bouquet of
flowers.
Mrs. Barbara Lupo, assistant
principal, recognized the attend
ants of the Royal Court. The boys
of the Court were given a blue and
white boutonniere. while the girls
were given a blue and white
corsage.
As the event progressed, the
students became more anxious to
entertain the Royal Court.
Mrs. Home's kindergarten class
(assistant Mrs. Furr) wanted to
present Your Highnesses with the
prize animal of the day, so they
went on a Buffalo Hunt.
Mrs. McCall's Kindergarten
class (assistant Mrs. Posey) dis
played their desire to stay physi
cally fit as they participated in
Mousercise.
Friendliness and harmony were
the order of the morning as Mrs.
M.K. Thomas's kindergarten class
(assistant Mrs. Gillis) displayed
their willingness to keep peace with
our southern neighbor as they
presented the Mexican Hat Dance.
To illustrate their interpretation
of the British word "lolly" which is
short for lollipop. Mrs. Horsley's
first grade class (assistant Mrs.
Hendrix) performed to the title of
Lolliwinks.
Mrs. E. Locklear's first grade
class (assistant Mrs. Myers) proved
that they are knowledgeable of the
dances that were popular in
colonial America as they gracefully
danced the Minuet.
Although it is believed by some
that disco-dancing is no longer
popular, Mrs. Wilkerson's first
grade class (assistant Mrs. Clip
pard) showed that the discotheque
is alive and doing well as they
presented their Discocise.
Miss Wood's first grade class
(assistant Mrs. Jones) informed
Your Highnesses that Hawaii is a
land of beauty as they presented
Hawaii Rhythm Instrument.
Mrs. Beatty's second grade class
(assistant Mrs. McMillan) was
delighted to show that creativity is
what makes us individuals as they
delighted the audience with Crea
tive Movements.
A magician would have faced
difficulty watching the hands of
Mrs. Bernhardt's second grade
students (assistant Mrs. Purcell) as
they presented Hand Jive. In
addition, what a beautiful oration
on the importance of saving our
trees as David Johnson expressed it
in the voice of one who is bound to
be a great public speaker; ac
companied by his classmates.
Rhvthm is part of a people's
culture as Mrs. Edwards' second
grade class (assistant Mrs. E.
Thomas) demonstrated in their
Rhythm Band presentation.
The students of Mrs. Baker's
third grade class (assistant Mrs.
Bease) showed their belief in the
state motto. "To be; rather than to
seem" as they demonstrated their
feelings about the Old North State
in their presentation of Carolina
Fever-Free Expression Style.
Mrs. R. Locklear's third graders
(assistant Miss Little) displayed
their love for square dancing as
they presented the Magic Trumpet.
What could have been a better
way to express one's feelings than
through folk songs as Mrs. Rock
well's third grade class (assistant
Mrs. Morrison) did their presen
tation of some folklore songs.
To bring the eventful occasion to
an end. the fourth graders, under
the instruction of Mrs. Barnwell,
Mrs. Lupo. and Mr. Tyler (as
sistant Mrs. Upchurch) beautifully
wrapped the Maypole.
As the Royalty desended the
platform for the recessional, and as
the subjects of the land watched
our Majesties, it was obvious from
the resounding applause that this.
West Hoke's first May Day festivi
ties - was indeed a Success with a
capital S, and was truly an
EXTRAVAGANZA!
