'Inside The Third Reich' On TV by Naomi Johnson The ABC production (May 9-10) of Inside the Third Reich was a fine adaptation of Albert Speer's memories depicting the inner work ings of Nazi Germany's political machine. Albert Speer (Rutger Hauer) was second in importance only to Hitler (Derek Jacobi) himself, and, according to the book's introduction, "one English newspaper had even written, toward the end of the war, that he (Speer) was more important to the German war effort than Hitler himself." How could a man who con sidered himself politically detached rise to a position of such extra ordinary importance, and how could he completely obliterate the atrocities going on around him? Speer's main problem was his ambition, not for power or prestige, but to further himself as an architect to become Hitler's master builder. So like Faust who sold his soul for knowledge, Speer sells his for position. He says, "Like Faust, I had found my Mephistopheles." The book and TV adaptation try to answer questions concerning Hitler's rise to power and how an individual with Speer's background and intelligence could be lured as he was. Speer was dedicated to his profession and his familv, parti cularly his wife, Marguarite (Blythe Danner). The TV adaptation romanticized the relationship be tween Speer and his family; he plays it down in the autobiography. He was highly respected by his colleagues at Berlin University and had great admiration for his to-be mentor. Professor Heinrich Tes senow (Trevor Howard), about whom he wrote: "My new professor is the most clear-headed man 1 have ever met. I am wild about him... I mean to try hard to be admitted to his master school in a year, and after another year will try to become his assistant." Later, after the party believed Tessenow to be a political suspect and barred him from teaching, Speer used his political influence to reinstate him to his position at the university. Speer also protected his close friend and client. Dr. Robert Frank. As the paTty became more powerful, those in prominent posi tions were afraid to do anything to jeopardize those positions, and those in less influential positions were afraid of losing the party's favor or even their lives. While at the university Speer had many Jewish friends and students, but after joining the party he obliterates any distasteful thoughts concerning Hitler's solutions (first to final) "to the Jewish problem." He admits to a Soviet colonel before the Nuremburg trial that he had never read "Mein Kampf and said "this failure was rooted in (his) inadequate political schooling." He continued by saying had he read it, he would have realized Hitler "was proclaiming expansion of the Reich to the East; was a rank anti-Semite; was committed to a system of authoritarian rule; and intended to eliminate democratic pro cedures...." In those early days, Hitler's mental toughness and ideologies mesmerized thousands of eager, young intellectuals, in cluding Speer. Every time I read something or see a program concerned with Hitler's rise to power I become first tense, then frightened and angry, and finally vindictive. I found "Inside the Third Reich " par ticularly upsetting because it seems incredible that a brilliant, clear thinking young man could be taken in by a megalomaniac opportunist. I found the ABC production startling at first because not only was it entirely in English, but there wasn't even a trace of a German accent not even at Hitler's most demagogic moments. This tech nique made this viewer wonder whether it was the producer's intention to question whether a similar situation could ever occur in an English-speaking country. No, this is 1982. Things like that no longer occil'f. It can't happen here ... or can it? Lisa Williams Wins National Award The United States Achievement Academy announced today that Lisa Williams of Raeford has been named a 1982 United States Na tional Award winner in business education. This award is a prestigious honor very few students can ever hope to attain. In fact, the Academy recognizes less than 5% of all American high school students. Lisa attends Hoke High School and was nominated for this Na tional award by Shirley Parsons, her typing instructor. Lisa will appear in the United States Achievement Academy Of ficial Yearbook, published na tionally. The Academy selects USAA winners upon the exclusive recommendation of teachers, coaches, counselors or other school sponsors and upon the Standards for Selection set forth by the Academy. The criteria for selection are a student's academic per formance, interest and aptitude, leadership qualities, responsibility, enthusiasm, motivation to learn and improve, citizenship, attitude and cooperative spirit, de pendability, and recommendation from a teacher or director. She is the daughter of Jackie and Jerry Williams and the grand daughter of Mrs. Doris Floyd and the late Heddie Floyd, and Mrs. Trannie Williams and the late O.G. Williams of Raeford.
