HOKE COUNTY'S WATER
SUPPLY
On January 11. I had an
opportunity to attend the kick-off
program of Hoke County NC 2000,
chaired bv Mrs. Betsy Ann Mc
Neill.
The entire program pointed out
the excellent foresight needed In
adequately planning for Hoke
County's future.
I would like to emphasize in this
article that portion of the NC 2000
Program presented by Robert Gat
lin which again brought to the
attention of all present a feasible
way of providing an additional
water source in Hoke County. This
water source could be used for
recreation, municipal and indus
trial water supply. The area pro
posed is north of Raeford along
Nicholson Creek, which could be
developed into a 300 acre lake.
As I look at our agriculture,
industrial development, and the
development of communities it
becomes quite evident that water
use and water quality is a very
timely subject for Hoke County
citizens to seriously address.
GOVERNOR'S COMMENT ON
WATER
Gov. James B. Hunt. Jr., and
three former North Carolina gov
ernors. Dan K. Moore. Robert W.
Scott, and James E. Holshouser,
said in a recent one-hour television
program that water resources f ere
among the state's greatest needs for
the luture. The governors were
participating in a program mode
rated by UNC President William C.
Fri?1 as to look at needs for the 21st
Century
Moore. Governor from 1965 to
1%^, said there's a need for
planning future water supplies and
environmental protection. "The
present national administration is
not as concerned as it should be
about the water and air problems",
he said.
Speaking also about the water
issue, former Governor Scott said
the state should begin to designate
areas for future reservoirs and to
protect them from development.
He said cities have to be prepared
to share water sources.
B. EVERETT JORDAN LAKE
On May 1, the B. Everett Jordan
Lake was formally dedicated. One
of the project's major intended
benefits is municipal and industrial
water supply. The Office of Water
Resources, in the Department of
Natural Resources and Community
Development, has prepared a
booklet describing for local gov
ernments the physical availability
and cost of water supply from
Jordan Lake.
The Jordan Lake is larger and
will serve a greater area than what
is proposed north of Raeford on
Nicholson Creek. However, the
need for Hoke County is just as
evident as for Wake and counties
adjacent to the Jordan Lake. The
proposal presented by Mr. Gatlin
appeared to have been well thought
out and a plan that should receive
th? attention of such groups as the
Rural Development Panel, Recrea
tion Commission, Industrial De
velopment Commission, and per
sons responsible for city and county
planning.
On behalf of the Agricultural
Extension Service. 1 certainly sup
port the kind of long range
planning shown in this kick-off
meeting of NC 2000 and pledge the
support of the Hoke County staff
and the resources of N.C. State and
A. & T. State Universities in
accomplishing the goals set as a
result of these plans.
