3 Hoke High Students Chosen For Co-op Camp Emmanuel Baldwin of Lumber Bridge, Andrea Shaw of Raeford and Patti Smith of Aberdeen have been selected by Lumbee River ^ Electric Membership Corporation, ~ to attend the Cooperative Youth Camp organized by the Cooperative Council of N.C. Emmanuel, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Hosea Baldwin, is a junior at Hoke County High School. Andrea, also a junior at Hoke County High School, is the daughter of Mrs. E.M. Fields. A senior at Hoke County High School, Pattie is the Kv daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ellis ? Smith. Jr. They are among more than 60 youth from across North Carolina who were selected by their local cooperative to learn how coopera tives work and to enjoy the fun and fellowship of a week at camp. The camp agenda this week will include organizing the campers' own cooperative, election of a board of directors, hiring a general manager, adoption of by-laws and I distribution of net savings. The youth will participate in informal seminars conducted by cooperative leaders who will ex plain marketing, purchasing and service cooperatives. "These young people are proven leaders who are already interested in co-ops" said F. Carlyle Teague, executive vice president of the Cooperative Council of N.C. ^ "By the time camp is over, they will have a much better under standing of the whole economic system. We're also sure they'll enjoy this fine campground with plenty of fun and swimming on the schedule." Among those addressing the campers this week will be Kirk Kirkman with the U.S. De partment of Agriculture; Commis sioner of Agriculture James A. I Graham; Secretary of State Thad Eure; C.E. Smith of FCX, Inc; and Dr. J.E. Legates of N.C. State University. Many other prominent agri cultural leaders will also participate on the program. f Emmanuel Baldwin (ft Patti Smith -?v. Andrea Shaw To Help Restore Historic House Mill Prong To Get Grant The Board of Trustees of the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation, Inc.. of Winston-Saleni has approved a grant of SI 5,000 for Mill Prong Preservation, Inc., of Hoke Coun ty The Hoke organization has been working on the preservation of the Mill Prong house about nine miles southwest of Raeford and on SR 1 120. The announcement of the board's approval was made by Thomas W. Lambeth, executive director of the foundation, in a letter, copies which were received by members of the Mill Prong organization. The letter was written to William S. McLean of Lumber ton, treasurer of Mill Prong Preser vation. The organization received a grant in 1979 from the National Trust for Historic Preservation to help the effort to restore and preserve the house. The house was built in the late 18th or early 19th century by John Gilchrist, a political and social leader of the community who lived from 1740 to 1802. It is one of the few remaining homes known to have been built by an immigrant Scot. Col. Archibald McEachern (1788-1873) bought the property from Gilchrist's heirs early in the 19th century and made extensive additions to the original building. Mrs. W. Richard Bullock of Red Springs, widow of McEachern's great-grandson, executed the lease of 50 years to Mill Prong Preserva tion. which is a nonprofit corpora tion chartered in 1978. George Paris of Red Jprings is president of the organization: Mrs. Hoke Girl Scout Bake, Yard Sales Friday Hoke County Girl Scouts will host a Bake Sale and Yard Sale Friday, June 18, at the Eden borough shopping center. The girls will be selling from 10 that morning till late afternoon. The group consist of Brownies, Juniors, and Cadettes. They are trying to raise money to pay for transportation to summer camp.
