Blazers Broke Even Last Weekend It was one win and one loss over the weekend for Hoke County's own semi-pro baseball team. Last Saturday the Blazers (powered their way over Lillington, 12-5, playing at Lillington, to keep their winning streak alive. Then Sunday afternoon, the Lumber Bridge All-Stars outdid our boys in a squeaker, 10 to 9. at Lumber Bridge. The Blazers con tinue to hold on to a firm first-place lead in the tri-county league, however. In Saturday's play, the Blazers quickly jumped out front with six runs before the Lillington squad got on the board. Then the Blazers teamed up for scores in the sixth, eighth and ninth innings to cement their 12-5 victory. A late rally for 4 runs by Lillington in the ninth Miss Horsley Wins In nNC-SC Junior Olympics On Saturday, Icesonnia Horsley and several of her teammates participated in the 1982 AAU/USA Junior Olympics North Carolina/ South Carolina State Champion ships Track and Field Meet held at Francis Marion College in Flor ence. S.C. | Competing in four events, Icesonnia won four gold medals. She captured first places in the long-jump with a jump of 1S*1 1 the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.7 seconds, which tied with the 1982 national record set by Carla McLaughlin in the youth division; the 400-meter run with a time of 64.49 seconds; and the 4x100 meter relay, for which she ran ?anchor leg, with a team time of %6.40. Her participation in this meet with outstanding performance qualified her to participate in the 1982 AAU/USA Junior Olympics Southern Regional III Champion ships to be held in Birmingham, Ala. On June 5 of last week she entered competitions in the 1982 TAC/USA Junior Olympic North Carolina Triangle Sectionals which were held at NCSU in Raleigh winning first place ribbons in the long-jump - distance 4.60 meters; the 100 meter dash - time 12.5 seconds; 4x100 meter relay - time 52.68 seconds; and she placed second in the 400 meter run - time 61 .73 seconds. Miss Horsley plans to enter the TAC/USA Junior Olympics North Carolina Championships June 18 19 to be held at North Carolina State University at Raleigh. Junior Tennis Tourney Opens June 25 The Hoke Junior Invitational Tennis Tournament will be held June 25-27 |n the McLauchlin Tennis Courts in Raeford, sponsored by the Hoke nTennis Association. , The tournament director is Steve Phillips, and the tournament chairman is Robert Calhoun. Alan Morrison provided the punch for the Blazers in this one, going 4 for 6 with the doubles. Bruce Cobb, a member of this year's Hoke High Bucks' baseball squad, just became eligible to join the Blazers and hit 2 for 5 for the day. Tim Clark banged the big one with a solo homer. Raschad Rah maan pitched a nice seven hitter and fanned 9. Playing Lumber Bridge for the third time this season, the Blazers struck for five runs in the second inning, only to see the All-Stars come back with four in the bottom of the inning. The Blazers went for three more scores in the third to take the lead again, but the All-Stars tied it up at 8 apiece in their half of the fifth and went ahead to stay with two more in the sixth. The Blazers tallied one more trip to the plate in the eighth where it all ended. Alan Morrison brought his bat to play in this game, too, duplicating Saturday's performance with an other day of 4 hits in 6 at-bats, including a double. Mike Nieves had 3 for 6 and Stanley Cummings 2 for 4. They each had a double to their credit also. Both teams had 13 hits for the afternoon. Pitching for the Blazers in this action were starter K. Carpenter, C. Blake and Rahmaan. Look for the Blazers at home this Saturday, June 19, at 3 p.m. at the high school field, playing St. Pauls. On Sunday afternoon they'll be at Eureka Springs.
