Theatre Productions Set
?
The Hoke County school system
and the Hoke County Arts Council
are co-sponsoring two Summer
Youth Theatre productions, one for
intermediate school students, rising
Fifth and Eighth graders, and one
for high school students, rising
Ninth through 12th graders.
Performance dates are tenta
tively scheduled for the first week in
August.
The director of these productions
is Pat Yates of Southern Pines.
Yates received her Bachelor of
Science degree in Theatre Arts
from East Carolina University in
1976. She has been employed by
the Moore County schools as the
director of Theatre Arts program at
Pinecrest High School. She has
worked with children's theatre
through the Southern Pines Rec
reation Department and was last
year's first director of the Sandhills
Arts Council's Youth Theatre
production of "Bus Stop." Since
her arrival in the Sandhills over five
years ago she has directed over 30
youth theatre projects, including
the Picquet Festival productions of
"Oliver!" and "Brigadoon."
The Hoke productions for Au
gust will consist of vocal music,
movement, and dramatic presen
tation skills. Auditions for these
productions will be held at Up
church Junior High School on
Wednesday, July 7, from 9 a.m. to
noon for intermediate students,
and from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. for high
school students. Further auditions
will be held on Thursday, July 8.
from 9 a.m. to noon for high school
students and from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
for intermediate students.
Students are asked to report to
the facility any time during these
hours dressed in comfortable
clothes for movement -- tennis or
lightweight shoes and jeans or
sweatpants.
Approximately 20 to 30 students
will be accepted for performance on
each level. Chosen students parti
cipating in the performance will be
asked to pay an $8 program fee as a
production commitment incentive.
Students will be chosen for
participation in this program en
tirely on merit. Formal training,
past theatre experience, and re
lated arts experience will be helpful
but de-emphasized. Auditionees
will be cast on audition and
interview strengths only.
The skills areas for private
audition/interview are vocal music,
movement, dance, gymnastics/
acrobatics, acting, dramatic
speech, visual art, electrics, car
pentry, and costume design. Stu
dents with one or any combination
of these skills are welcomed for
auditions.
If you are interested in technical
work only and not performance you
will simply need to fill out a form
and submit to a brief interview.
If you are interested in per
formance there is a three-part
audition. The first part is an
audition of vocal music skills. The
music director will ask you to sing a
simple vowel to establish your vocal
range - how high you can sing and
how low you can sing. If you are
able to bring the sheet music for a
formal vocal performance an ac
companist will be provided. Those
students without a prepared vocal
selection will be given a variety of
well-known songs to choose from
for singing.
The second part consists of a
movement audition. The student
will be shown a simple dance step
and asked to duplicate it. The third
part of the audition will consist of a
reading of dramatic material. The
selections will be available at the
front desk at auditions for perusal
before audition. The general
qualities desired in audition are
energy, enjoyment of material, a
feeling for the material, and an
ability to communicate a variety of
emotions.
All castings will be comparative.
The best students in any given field
will be selected. Students new to
the arts, new to theatre and
performance are urged to attend.
There are no experienced old hands
or experts in the field as there has
never been a program such as this
before. There are absolutely no
past experience or training skills
required except interest and a
desire to perform.
Student responsibilities for pro
duction will be outlined at audi
tions. Students will need a sig
nificant amount of free time on a
daily week day basis. Students will
be responsible for some costuming
and transportation to all rehearsals
and performances.
This is an extraordinary and
unprecedented opportunity for
Hoke County students. If suc
cessful, it is hoped that the Youth
Summer Theatre will become an
established, yearly event. The sup
port of all area parents and citizens
is appreciated.
