It Was Fun Before We Learned Eating Is Hazardous To Health by John Sledge N.C. Farm Bureau Federation There was a time when eating was fun, one of life's real pleasures. That was before we Americans discovered that eating is hazardous to our health. As youngsters, we were taught to eat several selections daily from the four food groups. Now, we're learning to be suspect of anything edible. Let's look at a typical breakfast. The bacon and sausage that we love so much have nitrites and fat. Our eggs have cholesterol. Hash browns are fried ?? another no-no. Milk has too much butterfat. Our cereals, we're told, aren't really nutritious And we eat them with too much sugar. Coffee is suspected of caus ing possible heart problems. This is breakfast, the meal mothers pro mote to their children as the most important meal of the day. We could settle for a glass of water and that all-time favorite breakfast item -- toast. But. can we really trust toast? No, say some scientists from Kansas State University. Toasting our bread, they claim, promotes a chemical reaction that reduces protein building amino acids in bread and converts nutrients into unusable forms. The scientists say it would be more nutritious if we didn't toast our bread. Do you realize that our breakfast has just been reduced to bread and water? Maybe when we threw convicts in the hole and fed them bread and water, we were doing them a favor. If we'd known then what we know today, we could have threatened them with bacon and eggs, hash browns, cereal, milk, coffee and toast. That would have made them change their ways! It all sounds pretty ridiculous, doesn't it? The problem is that too many conclusions are being drawn from inconclusive research. It is the type of "research" that gets people on talk shows and helps them sell books and articles, but it doesn't add much scientific knowledge about the causes of various health problems or their prevention. gusty winds, was reported in all sections of Hoke County Tuesday night, and in other neighboring areas as well, pushing temperatures down and bringing relief to suffer ing crops. * * * The spread of the gas war from the Piedmont section through Moore and Hoke County on Tues day of last week, and from Hoke into the edge of Cumberland on Wednesday, marked about the end of the spread. 15 years ago Thursday, July 27, 1967 A federal team will arrive here Wednesday to advise local school officials how to step up integration of Hoke County schools so as to comply with Title IV of the Civil Rights Act of 1%4. ? ? * Charles G.
