Scotland Merchants Win District Tourney
The 1982 Men's Softball District
Tournament was sponsored by
Hoke County Parks and Recreation
Commission August 16-19 at Rae
ford Armory Park.
The first game of the tournament
paired the All Stars and Ronnies.
The All Stars squeezed out the win
19-16. M. Brown 4-4, P. Maynor
3-4, and T. Ross were 2-4 for the
All Stars. M. Walters. H. Currie
and R. Wagner were 3-5 for
Ronnies. Home Runs: M. Brown 2,

In the second game, Scotland
Merchants defeated Hollingsworth
Barbers 18-7 in five innings. S.
Guinn 4-4. R. McGee 3-4, and B.
Parrish 3-4 were leading hitters for
the Merchants. D. McNeill 3-3,
and G. Hollingsworth 2-3 led the
way for Hollingsworth. Home

The third game saw Waverly
Mills down Hard & Heavy 18-10.

feated Jones Intercable 15-7. J.

In Tuesday night's first game
Scotland Merchants downed the
All Stars 20-3. M. Lytch 3-3, S.
Guinn, E. Dean, and R. McGee
were 3-4 for the Merchants. All
Stars leading batter was T. Rose
2-3. Home Runs: S. Guinn 1, M.
Lytch 2, and P. Maynor 1.
In the second game Family
nipped Waverly Mills 14-11. J.
Dockery and M. McNeill were
for Family. Jackson and T. Scott
were 3-4 for Waverly Mills. Home

The third game matched Ron
nies against Hollingsworth Bar
bers. Ronnies defeated the Barbers
8-5. K. Prevette 2-2, and M.
Walter 3-4 were leading batters for
Ronnies. D. McNeill 2-3 was the
hero for the Barbers.
In the final game of the night.
Hard & Heavy defeated Jones
Intercable 9-8. N. Singletary and
K. McDonald were 2-4 for Hard &
Heavy. H. Thompson 2-3 paced the
way for Jones. Home Runs: V.

and D. McNeill 1.
In Thursday night's action.
Waverly defeated Ronnies 14-3. J.
Butler 4-4 and Jackson 3-4 were
leading hitters for Waverly. R. Ellis
and D. Wagner went 1-2 for

In the sccond game. Hard &
Heavy downed the All Stars 18-12
behind some good hitting and good
defense. M. McDonald 4-4, N.

3-4 were the heroes for Hard &
Heavy. All Stars were led by M.
Brown 3-4, R. Maynor 3-4, and P.
Maynor 2-3. Home Runs: N.

The third game matched Scot
land Merchants against Family.
What duel that was! Family scored
six runs in the fifth inning and
came away with the win 21-15. J.
Dockery 4-4. C. Wright 3-5, and A.
Green 3-5 paced the Family.
Merchants were led by K. Guinn
3-4 and R. Lewis 2-4. Home Runs:

In the last game Thursday night.
Waverly Mills downed Hard &
Heavy 3-1 in a hard fought defense
game. Leading batters for Waverly
were V. Lewis 3-3, J. Butler 2-4 and
T. Scott 2-4. Hard & Heavy's K.
McDonald was 2-3.
In the final night of play, the first
game went to Scotland Merchants
13-12 over Waverly Mills. M. Lytch
was the hero for the Merchants
going 3-4, and Jackson went 3-4 for
Waverly Mills. Home runs were
gathered by S. Guinn 1, M. Lytch
3, R. McGec 1, B. Parrish 1,
Jackson 1 and B. Smith 1.
The second game went to
Waverly Mills as they defeated
Family 18-7. S. Guinn went 3-3 for
the Merchants while R. Brown and
C. Wright went 2-3 Family. Home
runs were credited to S. Guinn 3,
M. Lytch 1, R. McGee 1. J. White
2. C. Wright 1. and B. Nicholson 1.
In the championship game, the
Scotland Merchants edged out
Family 18-17. Family needed three
runs in the seventh inning to win.
but could squeeze in only two
before the final out.
Leading batters for Merchants
were E. Deon 4-5, and B. Lewis
4-5. Family was led by Dockery 4-4,
Brown and Rateliff went 3-4. Home
runs were collected by S. Guinn 1,
M. Lytch 1, B. Parrish 1, T. Rogers
1. Dockery 2, Brown 2, C. Wright
1. Rateliff 3, and Green 1.
Trophies were awarded to Scot
land Merchants as Tournament
Champs, to Family as Runners
ups, and to Waverly Mills for third
place.

Raeford Netters Win Honors
Raet'ord's Robert Calhoun and
Ches Hayes won the Men's 35
Doubles last weekend in the Second
annual Tennis Classic sponsored by
the Sanford Savings and Loan
Association of Sanford.
Hayes also was a finalist in the
men's 35 Singles.
Duncan Bouyer of Raeford won
the Sportmanship award.
Another player from Raeford,
John Miller, also competed.
The tournament was held Friday
through Sunday.
Men's Flag Football
Hoke County Parks & Recrea
tion will sponsor a men's flag
football league. For all interested:
current 9th graders and up.
There will be an organizational
meeting, Tuesday, September 7, in
the Parks and Recreation Office at
7:30 p.m. Interested teams and
individuals should be present. Con
tact the Recreation Office for more

successful learning experience for
each child. Each parent should visit
the child's school early in the year,"
continued Mrs. Clark, a fourth
grade teacher at South Hoke
school.
"A good working relationship
between the parents and the school
is one of the most important factors
in determining whether a child does
well in school. Educators want to
work with parents," she continued.
NCAE is the largest professional
association in the state, with some
45,000 teachers, principals, super
visors. superintendents, and other
certified educators as members.
The goals of NCAE are: the
professional improvement of its
members, the promotion and the
protection of the welfare of its
members, and the advancement of
the cause of education in North
Carolina.
Quewhiffle
4-H Club
Meets
The Quewhiffle 4-H Club held a
meeting August 5.
Discussions were held on future
activities. Activity books were dis
tributed to members.
Members achieving the activity
skills will be able to compete with
others.
Refreshments were served.
On July 15 the Quewhiffle 4-H
was treated to an evening at
Sinclair's pond. Members went
swimming, and the leaders served
refreshments. A good time was had
by all.
Volleyball Trials
Tryouts for the Upchurch Junior
High School girls' volleyball team
were scheduled for Wednesday,
starting at 3 p.m., in the school
gym.
All girls were advised they would
need sneakers, shorts and a towel.
The tryouts were to end at 4:15
p.m.
