Scotland Merchants Win District Tourney The 1982 Men's Softball District Tournament was sponsored by Hoke County Parks and Recreation Commission August 16-19 at Rae ford Armory Park. The first game of the tournament paired the All Stars and Ronnies. The All Stars squeezed out the win 19-16. M. Brown 4-4, P. Maynor 3-4, and T. Ross were 2-4 for the All Stars. M. Walters. H. Currie and R. Wagner were 3-5 for Ronnies. Home Runs: M. Brown 2, P. Maynor 2, R. Maynor 1, L. Morrison 1, D. McGill 1, and R. Wagner 1. In the second game, Scotland Merchants defeated Hollingsworth Barbers 18-7 in five innings. S. Guinn 4-4. R. McGee 3-4, and B. Parrish 3-4 were leading hitters for the Merchants. D. McDonald was 2-3. In the final night of play, the first game went to Scotland Merchants 13-12 over Waverly Mills. M. Lytch was the hero for the Merchants going 3-4, and Jackson went 3-4 for Waverly Mills. Home runs were gathered by S. Guinn 1, M. Lytch 3, R. McGec 1, B. Parrish 1, Jackson 1 and B. Smith 1. Raeford Netters Win Honors Raet'ord's Robert Calhoun and Ches Hayes won the Men's 35 Doubles last weekend in the Second annual Tennis Classic sponsored by the Sanford Savings and Loan Association of Sanford. Hayes also was a finalist in the men's 35 Singles. Duncan Bouyer of Raeford won the Sportmanship award. Another player from Raeford, John Miller, also competed. The tournament was held Friday through Sunday. Men's Flag Football Hoke County Parks & Recrea tion will sponsor a men's flag football league. For all interested: current 9th graders and up. There will be an organizational meeting, Tuesday, September 7, in the Parks and Recreation Office at 7:30 p.m. Interested teams and individuals should be present. Quewhiffle 4-H Club Meets The Quewhiffle 4-H Club held a meeting August 5. Discussions were held on future activities. Activity books were dis tributed to members. Members achieving the activity skills will be able to compete with others. Refreshments were served. On July 15 the Quewhiffle 4-H was treated to an evening at Sinclair's pond. Members went swimming, and the leaders served refreshments. A good time was had by all. Volleyball Trials Tryouts for the Upchurch Junior High School girls' volleyball team were scheduled for Wednesday, starting at 3 p.m., in the school gym.
