Area Incidents Cash, Tools Stolen The following were reported recently to the Hoke County Sheriffs Department. Harold Cashon, Rt. 1, Lumber Bridge, reported Monday a man gave an.$30 "payroll check" at Handy Stop at Dundarrach, after getting $5 worth of gas. The man was given $75 change and endorsed the check, which bore the name B&S Services, Rt. 4, Fayetteville. Later it was learned the Cumber land County Sheriffs Department had a misdemeanor warrant for larceny of blank checks from Thomas Stroud of Cumberland County. The warrant charged the man who had cashed the check at the Handy Stop. Hoke deputies arrested the man at his residence and turned him over the the Red Springs Police Department. Chester Bryant McNulty, Rt. 2, Raeford, reported September 7 someone broke into his mobile home on SR 1422 and stole a S70 cassette recorder and $25 in cash. On September 4 he reported some one stole a lawnmower and tools worth a total of SI.160 from his property. Mrs. Frank McFadyen, Raeford, reported someone stole a $100 clothes washer and a $60 table from her mobile home between Septem ber 6 and 9. Someone on September 9 or 10 stole tour tires, four rims, a CB radio, a regular radio, and speakers from Jerry's Auto Repair garage on Rubber Road. Someone on September 9 or 10 broke into Samuel Melvin Jr.'s, garage on Rt. 12, Fayetteville, and stole 51,679 worth of tools and tool boxes, and a $200 battery charger. Someone broke into the parts area of Correctional Enterprises at McCain Hospital September 8 or 9 and stole a floor jack worth $173.17 and two lawn mowers worth $298. 79 in all. Raeford Police Chief Leonard Wiggins reported his department received the following reports. James Long, 422 W. Prospect Ave., reported a 12.000 BTU air conditioner missing from his yard. He said it had been on a dog box last time he saw it. The air conditioner was valued at $200. Annie Jackson of 121 Stewart St. reported Sunday the license place sticker bearing the year number was discovered missing. It is valued at $16. Selena M. Livingston, 204 Adams St., reported Sunday a wallet containing $62.75 was taken from her purse, which was worth $7. The wallet was recovered later, and William Joseph Charles, Jr.. of 1152 Ratley Acres, was charged with larceny. Hoke Heart Association Officers Elected The Hoke County Heart Association held an organizational meeting September 9 at the Hoke County Public Library to plan for the 1982-83 Campaign. Emma J. Mims, principal of Turlington Elementary School, was elected president. Other of ficers elected include: Carol Page, secretary; Mrs. Barbara Lippard, treasurer; Mrs. Marth Lundy, education chairman; and Anna H. Jordan, public information chair man. Plans were discussed for the up coming year with Mrs. Esther Temple, field consultant for the North Carolina Heart Association. For the first time in several years the Hoke County Heart Associa tion will be a fulltime, all volunteer organization. The association will be able to place more emphasis on education and support services provided through the American Heart Association. Miss Mims stated, "We want to do more to inform the public of Hoke County of diseases of the heart and blood vessels, and the prevention pro grams supported by the Heart Association. Mrs. Martha Lundy has worked many years with education of heart diseases, and will be a valuable asset in this area." In other business, Miss Mims presented awards and certificates from the North Carolina Heart Association for the 1981-82 Fund raising Campaign. The Hoke County Heart Association received the Fund-raising Achievement Award for the "Most Improved Fund-raising Performance" last year. The local units raised 511,176.06 in their annual cam paign. Miss Mims and Anna Jordan received the Achievement Recogni tion Award, the fourth highest for individual service given by the North Carolina Heart Association. It is given to volunteers who have continued dedicated service to the administrative, fund-raising, public relations or medical and community programs of the Unit. The Founder's Award, the fifth highest for individual service, was given to Mrs. Delia McNeill, Mrs. Joyce Griffin, Mrs. Betsy Collins and Susan Blackman for sustained service in Heart Fund programs for several years. Heart Pins were given 10 Mrs. Barbara Lippard and Mrs. Betty Upchurch for their work throughout the year. Certificates of Appreciation were presented for outstanding work during the fund-raising cam paign to the following: Jimmy Wood, Jan Dial, Kathy Hendrix, Jessie Dupree, Danny McGougan, Mazelle Connell, Steve Phillips. Robert Calhoun, Elma Page. Grace MacDonald and Becky Sut ton. The Hoke County Tennis Association received the Outstan ding Achievement Award for Clubs and Organizations. Earlier in the year. The News Journal received the William G. Cole Award for outstanding con tribution to the cause of Heart dur ing during 1981-82. Drew Wood In 'Outstanding' Group Andrew McLean (Drew) Wood III of Raleigh, grandson of Jewel S. Klouse. has been chosen for mem bership in "Outstanding Young Men of America" for 1982, "in recognition of outstanding profes sional achievement, superior lead ership ability and exceptional ser vice to the community," the certifi cate awarded to him says. The certificate bears the signa ture of Doug Blankenship, chair man of the OYM of A Board of Advisors. He is the son of Mrs. Judy Klouse Thompson and Andy Wood of Raleigh. Drew Wood completed Broughton High School in 1966, playing in the North Carolina South Carolina Shrine Bowl foot ball game which North Carolina won that year. He attended Appa lachian State University at Boone on a football scholarship. On August 8, 1970, he and Andrea Calhoun were married in Sacred Heart Cathedral in Raleigh, returned to Appalachian and gra duated together. They have two children: Samantha. 6'/j, and Kyle, 5. Drew Wood and his wife work for the state, he in the Budget Division and she in the ABC Division, and live in Raleigh's historic Oak wood section. Drew has a sister, Vikki Jewel Olson. Benton bought the hat and coat for 51.50 altogether at a yard sale in Hag ram August 28. Mrs. Benton is holding Peanut. The pooch has 25 other coats, which the Bentons paid 58 to 59 for each. Peanut's daddy, Tippy, who is 18years old, has his own wardrobe of 15 coats. Peanut can 7 share his coals with dad because, ,v1rs. Benton explained, Tippy is fatter than Peanut. There was congregational meeting following the worship service. Sub-district leaders meeting of the United Methodist Women met at Culbreth United Methodist Church in Fayetteville Sunday afternoon, September 12th at 2:30 o'clock. Mrs. Nan Hayward Sub district leader and several other women from Sandy Grove Church attended. Mrs. Mina Townsend in charge of the program which was very informative. Little Jason Swann recently celebrated his third birthday with a party in the Fellowship Hall of Pittman Grove Baptist Church. Games were played and Mrs. Susie Ellis played the part of a clown for special entertainment, which was con cluded with a clown pinata. Fifteen children and several adults at tended. A clown birthday cake was served with ice cream. Everyone had a real good time. A group of youth and several adults enjoyed a skating party at Bordeau in Fayetteville just prior to school beginning. They had the pleasure of seeing ex-president Jimmy Carter and his entourage as he arrived for the fund raising dinner in his honor the same evening. Mr. and Mrs. John Gibson and children. Miss Katie Black of the Galatia Community entered Duke Hospital the past Sunday for surgery. Mrs. E.T. Brock. Jr. who was admitted to Cape Fear Valley Hospital with pneumonia. Tuesday September 7th hopes to be released soon. Mrs. Pauline Kennedy of Fay etteville visited her sister. Mrs. Amos Grant. Jr., Mr. Grant and family the past Sunday afternoon. Mrs. Kennedy had been on the sick list recently but is getting along much better at this time. Mrs. Ozell Hester was admitted to Wake Memorial Hospital in Raleigh Tuesday of this week for tests and possibly surgery. The response to "Open House" at Chicks Ceramics on Rockfish Raeford Road last week was very good. There were door prizes and drawings for several other prizes. If you missed it Mrs. Elizabeth Jones invites you to come by and see the new expansion and work space at the shop. They are also beginning Christmas items. Thomas McCall and son-in-law, "Butch" Posey and Billy Posey went th Holden Beach fishing the past Saturday. They had a good trip however, the iish were not biting too well. Jackson The funeral for Edward Milton Jackson. 41, was conducted Sunday afternoon at Parkton Baptist Church. Burial was in Parkton Cemetery. Mr. Jackson died Saturday. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Carol A. Jackson; his son, Edward, M. Jackson of the home: his father. Eugene Jackson; and his sisters. Mrs. Betty Jean Inman of Lumber ton. and Mrs. Faye Booth of Raeford. Crumpler Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements. Mrs. Sadie McCain Graveside services for Mrs. Sadie Lou McCain, once active in Hoke County politics and widow of Dr. Paul Pressley McCain, for whom McCain Hospital was named, were held September 3 in the cemetery of Old Bethesda Presbyterian Church at Aberdeen. Mrs. McCain died September 2 at the age of 88 in Wilson, where she had been living since 1957. She lived in McCain for many years till shortly after her husband was killed in a traffic accident in 1946. At the time he was superin tendent of the state sanitoria system. Mrs. McCain s father. Dr. Lewis Burgin McBrayer. had served as superintendent of the North Carolina Sanitorium at Mc Cain till he was succeeded by Dr. McCain. Later, the name North Carolina Sanitorium was changed to its present McCain Hospital. Mrs. McCain was a native of Asheville. While living in Hoke County she once served as vice chairman of the State Democratic Executive Committee during Gov. J. Melville Broughton's administra tion. and was a member of the Hoke County Democratic Execu tive Committee. A daughter-in-law. Betty Mc Cain. served for several years as state Democratic chairman till a few years ago. Betty McCain is the wife of Dr. John Lewis McCain, a Wilson physician. Mrs. Sadie McCain also was named North Carolina Mother of the Year in 1945. She was for several years dean of women at Flora Macdonald College at Red Springs, was a former member of the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees of the Consoli dated University of North Carolina, and a former president of the Alumnae Association of the Women's College of UNC at Greensboro (now UNC at Greens boro). She also had served on the Board of the State TB Sanitoria System and was a life member of the Tryon Palace Board. Mrs. McCain also had been a president of the Fayetteville Presbytery and was the first woman elected an elder of First Presbyterian Church of Wil son. Surviving in addition to Dr. McCain are her daughter, Mrs. Sara Louise McCain McCollum of Eden; and Mrs. Jane Todd Reagen; and nine grandchildren. Mrs. Rea gen and her husband, John, are serving as Presbyterian mission aries in Tokyo, Japan. Mrs. McCain had two other children but they preceded her in death. Her son Paul Jr. was lost over the English channel during the Normandy invasion of June 1944 while serving as a navigator on an Air Force plane that was shot down. Her daughter Dr. Irene McFarland died of a coronary in 1962. She was a psychiatrist on the staff of the After-Care Clinic in Wilson at the time. luulorc 11. Odom St. Pauls -- Mrs. Isadore Hamil ton Odom. 76, died Thursday, , September 9, at Southeastern Gen- -w eral Hospital in Lumberton. Funeral services were held Sat urday at 2 p.m. from the Second Baptist Church, conducted by the Revs. James Meacham and John Moody. Burial was in the Hamilton Family Cemetery on Route 1, Shannon. Surviving are her husband, Wil liam Alford Odom; one son, Willie ^ Carl Odom of Raeford; seven 4 daughters. Mrs. Nora Smith of Parkton, Mrs. Bonnie Pate of Raeford, Mrs. Annie Ruth Lewis. Mrs. Ruby Johnson, Mrs. Mary Register, Mrs. Flora Fisher, and Mrs. Frances Blackman, all of St. Pauls; one brother, Bleece Hamil ton of Red Springs; 19 grandchil dren, and one great-grandchild. Bei\)amln M. Bradin >1 Benjamin M. Bradin, retired Army Lieutenant Colonel, who served in Raeford in the National Guard for many years died in late July at the Fairfield Memorial Hospital in Winnsboro. South Carolina. He had been living in Camden, South Carolina, at the time of his death. ^ Mr. Bradin lived in Southern*} Pines for a number of years and was well known in the Raeford community. He served in the Old Battery "F" National Guard Unit prior to World War II. Born in Punta Gorda. Fla.. he was a son of the late Rev. Benjamin and Edith Smith Bradin. Mr. Bradin was retired from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and a veteran of World War II. He served with the Coast Artillery and later with the Engineer Utility Detachment in the early occupation of Berlin. He was a Mason, a member of the Scottish Rite and was very active with the Boy Scouts. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Marion Brown of Columbia; a son. Col. James Watson Bradin of Charleston; eight grandchildren;x J and three great grandchildren. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Grace Episcopal Church, with burial in Quaker Cemetery. The family suggests that those who wish may make memorials to Grace Episcopal Church and the Episcopal Home for Children at York. jColleg e^ews| Debra Lynn Shockley, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles E. Shockley of Raeford, has been selected as a Pembroke State University cheerleader for the 1982 83 school year. -i She competed against 17 other'J girls in the event and finished tied for third of the 10 who were selected. Miss Shockley is a sophomore majoring in biology in preparing for a career as a medical technolo gist. Two Hoke Women Get UNC Degrees Two Hoke County residents were among summer graduates at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Pamela Kay Page received a Master of Education degree, and Kathy Diane Williams was award ed a Bachelor of Science degree.
