Betts - Willcox Couple Wed
In Presbyterian Church Here
Mary Catherine Willcox and
Erskine Moore Betts, 11 were
united in marriage on September
eleventh at three o'clock in the
Raeford Presbyterian Church. Rev
erend John C. Ropp officiated at
the double ring ceremony.
The bride, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. R. Palmer Willcox is a
graduate of the University of North
Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is
presently employed as a loan officer
at Sanford Savings & Loan.
The groom, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Lowry M. Betts of Pittsboro,
attended the University of North
Carolina at Chapel Hill and is
employed as a sales representative
with Pac-Fab, Inc. of Sanford.
A program of traditional nuptial
wedding music was provided by
Mrs. Kerr Stevens, organist and
Miss Gay Ivey vocalist who sang
"The Wedding Song" and "The
Lord's Prayer."
Two spiral candelabra con
taining white, burning tapers and
interspersed with greenery and two
seven-branched candelabra flanked
by palms formed the setting for
the ceremony. The center altar
arrangement consisted of white
gladiolus, white fujji. pompoms,
gypsophila and variegated pittis
porum.
The mother's pews were marked
with hurricane candle holders,
variegated pittisporum. springri
and gypsophila tied with white lace
ribbon.
The bride, escorted by her father
and given in marriage by her
parents, wore a formal gown of
white chiffonctte featuring a Queen
Ann neckline and empire waist
embellished with seed pearls and
silk venise lace and sequins with
fitted sleeves of point d'esprit fabric
and silk venise lace. The
A-lined skirt, bordered in scalloped
shiffli lace, extended into a full
chapel lenth train. Her fingertip
length veil was attached to a crown
headpiece of venise lace adorned
with seed pearls and irridescence.
She carried a cascade style bouquet
of white miniature carnations,
bride's roses, gypsophila and varie
gated ivey.
Amy Willcox, sister of the bride,
was maid of honor. Bridesmaids
were Lew Hllyn Betts. sister of the
groom, of Georgetown, Virginia.

of Greensboro, and Kathy Wil
liams of Chapel Hill. 1 hey carried
hand bouquets of light pink minia
ture carnations, white starburst.

rose satin and white lace ribbon.
The attendants wore formal
gowns of daphne rose qiana knit.
The spaghetti strap dress with
criss-cross draped bodice and
diagonally-draped wrap skirt
featured a rich chiffon walking
length cape with split-shoulder
sleeves and boat neck. They carried
hand bouquets of light pink minia
ture carnations, white starburst.

Lowrv M. Betts served as his
son's best man. Groomsmen were
Rob Willcox of Raeford. brother of
the bride. Clawson Williams of
Chapel Hill. Tim Sanford of
Charlotte. Mark Coats of Raleigh
and Arnold Brown of Sanford.
The groom was attired in an
oxford gray cutaway with black and
gray striped trousers, pearl gray
vest, and silk ascot with wing
collar. The best man and grooms
men were similarly attired with
oxford gray strollers and ascots as
was the bride's father.
The mother of the bride wore a
floor-length pink gown and a
corsage of sweetheart roses. The
mother of the groom also wore a
formal floor-length gown in light
green and a corsage of white
sweetheart roses.
The grandmothers of the bride.
Mrs. William Lamont and Mrs.
Eva Willcox, and the grandmother
of the groom, Mrs. William
Waugh, selected floor-length
gowns and wore corsages of white
carnations and gypsophila.
Mrs. Carson Davis, Jr. directed
the wedding and the bride s book
was kept by Miss Cindy Connell.

tained with a reception in the
fellowship hall of the church im
mediately following the ceremony.
Guests were received by Mr. and
Mrs. Dave Barrington and Mr. and
Mrs. Bobby Gibson.
Mrs. Erskine Maori' Belts

with a white cloth was centered
with a silver five-branched candela
bra filled with pink snapdragons,
starbnrst. gvpsophila. dusty rose
carnations, light pink miniature
carnations, burgundy celosia, for
ever yours, red roses and springri.
The tour-tiered wedding cake
was topped with a nosegay of pink
sweetheart roses, starburst. minia
ture white carnations and gypso
phila. A bouquet of pink sweet
heart roses, starburst miniature
white carnations and gvpsophila
decorated the cake knife."
Along with the wedding cake
served by Mrs. Andy Lamont. Mrs.
William Lamont. Ill and Mrs.
Walter Harper, aunts of the bride,
nuts, mints and assorted open
taccd sandwiches were served.
Punch was poured from a silver
bowl by Mrs. Jean L. Dickson and
Mrs. Charles Lamont. great aunts
<>? the bride and Mrs. Duncan
MacRae and Mrs. Jim Love, aunts
of the bride. A side table centered
with a fresh pineapple contained
assorted fresh fruits served in
scooped pineapple boats.
I he bride s table displaying por
traits of the bride was adorned with
a bud vase containing three long
stemmed red roses, gvpsophila and
fern. The register was kept by Mrs.
Eddie Ramsey and goodbyes were
said by Mr. and Mrs. John Balfour
and Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Leach.
For travel the bride wore an aqua
sundress with matching long
sleeved jacket and her mother's
corsage. Family and friends of the
bride and groom showered the
couple with rice as they departed
from (he bride's home for a trip to
Seabrook Island in South Carolina.
Upon their return they will reside in
Sanford.
Out of town guests were Mr. and

BRIDESMAIDS- LUNCHEON
On Friday, September 10th. at
12:J0. the bridesmaids' luncheon
was held by Mrs. William Lamont.
grandmother of the bride-elect.
Mrs. William Lamont, III of New
Bern, and Mrs. Andrew Lamont of
Lumber Bridge, aunts of the
bride-elect; at the Manor Inn. in
Pinehurst. Places were laid for
sixteen on the sun porch. The table
was. centered with a mixed ar
rangement of roses, mums, carna
tions, and babies' breath. The
bride-elect's place was marked with
a miniature bride and rice bags of
tulle and ribbon were at each place.
The meal consisted of a fruit cup.
chicken crepes with broccoli,
broiled tomatoes and an ice cream
roll with nuts and hot chocolate
sauce. Gifts were given to the
attendants at this time and the
bride-elect received gifts of silver
and crystal.
REHEARSAL DINNER
Following a six p.m. rehearsal at
the church on Friday evening, at
eight o'clock the bridal party
adjourned with other guests for a
rehearsal dinner in honor of the
bridal couple, hosted by the bride
groom's parents. Mr. and Mrs.
Lowry M. Belts of Pittsboro.
Bridesmaids, groomsmen and their
dinner partners were joined by
immediate families, friends and
out-of-town guests for a steak
dinner at the J.F.R Barn. Southern
Pines. The bride-elect received a
white corsage. The wedding colors,
white and dusty rose, were a feature
of the floral centerpiece at the head
table.
Approximately sixty guests at
tended. The dinner ended with
champagne toasts to the happiness
of the couple.

Miss Jane Patton Poole, sopho

daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William
L. Poole, of Raeford. made her
formal bows to society at the 1982
Debutante Ball, sponsored by the
Terpsichorean Club, in Raleigh on
Friday evening. September 10. at
the Raleigh Civic Center. Imme
diately after the formal presenta
tion a dance was held at the
Carolina Country Club, followed by
a 12:30 a.m. buffet breakfast.
Miss Poole was escorted by her
father as chief marshal, and her
brother. Graham Poole, senior at
The Citadel. Charleston. S.C.. as
assistant marshal.
Following registration on Thurs
day. rehearsal was held at the
Raleigh Civic Center, and a cock
tail party honoring the Debutantes
and their parents was held at the
Carolina Country Club at 7:00 that
evening. Friday at noon, mothers of
the girls were feted at a Brunch
given by the Honorary Chairman.
Dr. Annie Louise Wilkcrson. at the
Carolina Country Club. The Debu
tantes and their fathers attended a
Champagne Brunch at the Angus
Barn.
There was a dance on Saturday
morning for the debs at the
Carolina Country Club. The
parents cocktail party was given at
the Capital City Club from 5:30
7:00 p.m.. and the final event was a
dance at the R'adisson Pla/a Hotel
for debutantes and their marshals
Saturday evening.

held its September meeting at the
home of Miss Isabel McFadyen
with Miss Sarah Lytch. Mrs.

The business session was pre
sided over by Miss Caroline Parker,
chairman. During this time year
books were distributed, committees
were read, programs discussed,
and general plans made for the
year's work.
A sweet course with coffee was
served by the hostesses during the
social hour.

Curries Attend
100 Bombardment
Group Reunion
Retired Lt. Colonel and Mrs.
David Scott Currie attended a
three-day reunion of the 100th
Bombardment Group of World
War II. at the Landmark Best
Western Resort in Myrtle Beach,
during the past weekend.
The "Bloody 100th" was one of
the most celebrated bomber groups
flying B-17 bombers, during the
war while stationed in England. A
group of about 500 attended.
A Sept. II banquet was the
highlight of the weekend. General
Jerome F. O'Malley. Vice Chief of
Staff of the U.S. Air Force, was the
keynote speaker.
Lt. Col. Currie was assigned to
Group Armament, as a Group
Turret Officer, which was always
one of the deciding factors on
waging offensive warfare.
... After the war ended .he was
stationed in Germany and Japan,
as well as various stations in the
United States, before retiring and
moving back to Raeford.

program on "Window Cover-Ups."
Mrs. Bessie Davis won the door
prize.

M.V. Hedgpeth was honored on
his 77th birthday at St. Joseph's
Nursing Home in Pinehurst.
Hosts tor the occasion were his

Hedgpeth of Laurinburg and Bob
by Hedgpeth of Red Springs.
The hosts, their wives, their
mother, and Mr. Hedgpeth's 14
