Mrs. Carlton Niven, Social Reporter, 875-3785 Mrs. Jackson Celebrates 79th Birthday Mrs. Hattie Mae Jackson cele brated her 79th birthday on August 29. A covered dish dinner was given by her children: Mrs. Kathleen McBryde, Mrs. Frances Mclnnis, Mrs. Betty Jo Leach, Mrs. Virginia Gartino, all of Raeford; Mrs. Marie Hickman. Greenpond, S.C.; Howard Jackson, Fayetteville; Mack Jackson, Parkton; Bobby Jackson, Lumber Bridge; Billy Jackson, Hope Mills, and Mrs. Carol Tew, Charleston, S.C. Over 50 relatives attended the occasion, including two of Mrs. Jackson's sisters, many grand children and great-grandchildren. Lytle decendents gathered at the Sheraton Inn in Pinehurst on Friday of last week for their reunion, held every other year. Approximately 80 members of the family gathered on Friday for a weekend of fellowship. They ar rived from California, Pennsyl vania, Florida, Maryland, Virginia and North Carolina. One of the main highlights of the occasion was a banquet Friday evening, served buffet style. Mrs. G.C. Lytle, widow of G.C. Lytle, was the oldest member of the family present. Others from here and other towns accompaning Mrs. Lytle were Mr. and Mrs. Chalmers Davis and their daughter, Deborah of Charlotte; Mrs. Martha Miller, Mr. and Mrs. Warren Phillips and members of their family; Miss Donnie McMillan of Fayetteville and Miss Donna Marie McMillan of Raleigh. Around noon Sunday families headed for home with arangements made to meet for the next reunion in Richmond, Va. Bridge Club Entertained At Beach Mrs. J.H. McPhaul entertained members of her bridge club during the weekend at her cottage at Holden Beach. Accompaning Mrs. McPhaul were: Mrs. T.B. Lester, Mrs. Paul Burnett, Mrs. J.H. Blue. Mrs. Bobby Carter. Mrs. W.T. Gibson. Mrs. Robert Gatlin. Mrs. R.A. Matheson and Mrs. William Lamont. Mrs. McFadyen Attends Meeting AtN .C. State Mr. and Mrs. Neill McFadyen spent the weekend in Raleigh where Mrs. McFadyen attended the trustees meeting at North Carolina State University on Friday, after which she and Mr. McFadyen were dinner guests in the home of the Chancellar. Dr. Bruce Poulton. They attended the N.C. State and Wake Forest football game on Saturday, and visited in the home of their son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. John McFadyen before returning home on Sunday. Blue was hostess to her luncheon bridge club on Tuesday of last week. Mrs. J.H. Wright was the only visitor. Guests were seated at the dining table, centered with a lovely ar rangement of roses, for a three course luncheon. Roses also adorned tables placed in the living room. Mrs. Chandler Roberts received the high score prize, and Mrs. Wright was remembered with a gift. Mrs Jordan Mrs. Faye Jordan was hostess to the members of her bridge club on Tuesday evening of last week. Club members and visitor. Mrs. Bennie Kelly, were served a dessert course upon arrival. Punch, nuts and candy were served during play. Mrs. Carlton was the recipient of the high score prize, and Mrs. Kelly was remembered with a gift. Mrs Manning Mrs. Ed Manning was hostess to the members of her bridge club on Thursday evening of last week. All members were present and were served a dessert course before the game. Prizes were won by Mrs. Jennie Carrol. Mrs. George King and Mrs. Alfred Leach, for high, second high and low scores, re spectively. Mrs Wright Mrs. J.H. Wright was hostess to her bridge club on Thursday evening of last week. Homemade ice cream was served on arrival, grapes, peanuts. M&Ms and punch were served during the game. Mrs. A.R. FitzSimons was the only visitor and won high score, Mrs. Bennie Kelly, low score and Mrs. Berder Niven. bingo; all were presented a gift. Mrs. Neil Senter left Tuesday to join friends from Mt. Airy. N.C. for a vacation at Sugar Loaf Mt.. N.C. Mr. and Mrs. Marion Gatlin have returned after spending a week at Topsail Beach. Mrs. Jewel Klouse of North Myrtle Beach has been visiting relatives here for several days. The Golden Age Luncheon Held On Wednesday Members of "The Golden Age Covered Dish Luncheon" held their meeting in the Fellowship Hall at the presbyterian church on Wed nesday of last week. They met at 12 noon and served themselves from the buffet table, centered with a large arrangement of lovely roses. Special guests were Dr. John C. Ropp, Rev. Douglas Mark and the new choir director and his wife. Mr. and Mrs. Ashley Eurell. Mr. Will Gillis. guest speaker, of Galatia Presbyterian church gave a very informative talk and showed slides of his trip to Brazil, where he and his wife visited the Presby terian Missionaries, the Rev. and Mrs. Fred Dinkins. Mr. & Mrs. Conoly Honored On 60th Anniversary Mr. and Mrs. C.C. Conoly recently celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary. They were joined by their son-in law. Mr. and Mrs. John Self of Lenoir. Mr. Conoly's sisters. Mrs. Charlie Baker, Mrs. Willa Jones, Mrs. Lela McQuage, Mrs. Cara McMillan and his brother, Archie Conoly; Mrs. Conoly's brother, Clark Goodman, and her sister, Mrs. Grace Daramus. Their son, Charles Conoly of Fayetteville. was unable to attend. They gathered at an appointed table at the Edinborough Res taurant for a steak dinner with accessories and anniversary cake. Mrs. Conoly wore a corsage of pink carnations and Mr. Conoly wore a boutonniere. Later in the evening the party adjourned to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Conoly and continued their reminiscing. Mr. and Mrs. Ed McDuffie spent Saturday in Mt. Airy visiting Mrs. McDuffie's father, Harry Rey nolds. Mr. Reynolds returned home with his daughter to spend the week. Barry Ellis of Winston-Salem spent the weekend with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Ellis. A1 Wilkins, classmate at Central NC School of the Deaf was a weekend guest of Steven Lentz, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Lentz. The re ception was hosted by their daugh ter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. George Johnson, III of Winchester, Va. their sons, Billy McDiarmid of Raeford and Jimmy McDiarmid of Lumberton, in the Fellowship Hall at the Antioch Presbyerian Church. Guests were greeted by Mr. and Mrs. Everette McNeill. Mr. and Mrs. McDiarmid, their children, grandchildren, Mr. and Mrs. D.S. Overstreet and Mr. and Mrs. Doug Johnson of Red Springs formed the receiving line. During the evening a program of background organ music was pre sented by Mrs. Alfred Leach. Among the selections played were "The Lord's Prayer", "Little Church in The Wildwood", and "Wayfaring Stranger". Mr. and Mrs. Archie Mc Diarmid presided over the register, after which guests were invited into the refreshment area by Mr. and Mrs. A.S. Baldwin. A sheer embossed cloth over pink covered the table, centered with an arrangement of mixed silk flowers in which burgundy and pink were predominant in an heirloom cut glass bowl over 200 years old. Mrs. f Mildred Upchurch of Lexington and Mrs. James Prevatte of South port served punch from a bowl placed at one end of the table. Guests helped themselves to finger foods. The three tiered wedding cake was placed on an individual table covered with a creme satin cloth edged in lace and was served by Mrs. W.H. Schell and Mrs. W.C. Murchison. f Mrs. Herbert Gillis and Miss Susan Upchurch of Charlotte and Mrs. Virginia Bounds of Red Springs greeted guests in the gift room. Among the many gifts received by Mr. and Mrs. Mc Diarmid was a Harper's Bazaar newspaper dated January 20, 1872. Goodbys were said to Mr. and Mrs. Merritte Gibson of Fayette- ^ ville and Mr. and Mrs. Johnny 1 McDiarmid of Raeford. Over 225 guests called during the evening. Personals Mr. and Mrs. Walter Thomas spent several days last week in the mountains and Myrtle Beach. Mr. and Mrs. Ed Manning had as their recent visitors Mr. and Mrs. David Christy of Folkstone, Ga. They were enroute to Morehead City for a visit with her parents. Mr. and Mrs. Chuck Clark. Mr. and Mrs. Julian King and children, Mr. and Mrs. Hank Richards and children spent the weekend at Topsail Beach. They were joined by Col. and Mrs. Martin Beach of Ft. Bragg. Mrs. A.R. FitzSimons, Mrs. Eddie Owen and daughter. Elizabeth returned Wednesday after spend ing several days at Holden Beach. Jimmy Jones of Nashville, Tenn. spent last Friday night in the home of his mother Mrs. J.C. Jones, en route to Myrtle Beach. Mrs. McLauchlin Is Honored At Drop-In Mrs. Tom McLauchlin, who will be leaving Raeford soon for the Presbyterian Home in High Point, was honored at a drop-in at 3:30 last Thursday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Harold Gillis with Mrs. Ken McNeill, co-hostess. A gorgeous arrangement of white mixed flowers and greenery cen tered the refreshment table from which very close friends were served chocolate cake, nuts and punch. Roses were used on tables in the living room. Mrs. McLauchlin has made her home in Raeford many years and will be a great loss to the Raeford Presbyterian Church and com munity to which she has been devoted. She has resided tempo rarily in the home of Mrs. Lee Cameron, and will join her sisters, Mrs. Rachel McCauley and Miss Sarah Louise Hanna at the Pres byterian Home. She has two daughters, Mrs. Marie Raynor of Fayetteville and Mrs. Jane Gardner of Belvedere, N.J. Chaminade Music Club Holds Meet The Chaminade Music Club held its first meeting of the year, at the home of Mrs. Robert Calhoun. The program for the evening was presented by Miss Ellen Hinden ucle. She played several selections with the twelve string guitar. Following her Mrs. Mirian McNeill gave a short sing along. After the program a social hour was held by the hostesses. Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Bond and family, who have made their home in Raeford for several years, left the first of the week to make their d home in South Boston, Virginia. Mr. Bond is Products Development Manager at the Burlington Plant in Clarksville, Va. Miss Martha Shaw Clark, who has been employed in Charlotte, has been visiting in the home of her brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy McPhaul and family. Mrs. J.B. McLeod visited in the ^ home of her brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Bob Foreman in Elizabeth City, several days last week. Rev. and Mrs. James Faircloth, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Ferrell, Mr. and Mrs, Frank Parker and Margaret Harris attended the Church of God of Prophecy 77th Annual Assembly in Cleveland, Tenn. last week. ( Mrs. June Johnson, Miss Caroline Parker, Miss Alma Ferguson and Mrs. John Campbell returned the first of the week after a trip to Niagara Falls, Toronto, and other points of interest. Before joining the group Miss Parker had visited her nephew, Richard Neely in Washington, D.C. Retired School Personnel Meets The Hoke County Unit, of the N.C. Retired School Personnel, held its first meeting of the year last Wednesday morning at 10:30 at the Hoke County Library assembly room. Refreshments were served upon arrival. Two new members were wel comed in- the club, Mrs. J.A. Farmer and Mrs. Ella Gibson Carr. Mrs. Roxana Maynor, who heads the IV-D Program of Social Security in the Hoke County De partment of Social Services, was guest speaker. She gave an en lightening talk on the child support and paternity program, during which time she stated that in Hoke County there are over 1000 cases of children who have been aban doned. Steven Lentz Has Party On 13th Birthday Steven Lentz celebarted his 13th birthday with a party on Saturday September 18 at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Lentz. The theme for the party was "Pac Man" with all guests re ceiving a game of Pac Man. Guests included Micheal Mer cer, Michael Caulder, A1 Wilkins, and Nicklaus Lentz.
