CLIFF BLUE... People & i Issues BOB SCOTT...Former Gover nor Bob Scott was a pleasant caller at the Sandhill Citizen in Aberdeen a few days ago. 1 had not seen Bob to talk with at length for some-time. We had lunch together and reviewed old times and chatted about the future, I but of course none of us know for sure what tomorrow will bring. Who was it who said: "The philosophies of one age have become the absurdities of the next, and the foolishness of yesterday has become the wisdom of tomor row." Bob was frank as usual. 1 have always found him that way. He doesn't beat around the bush. In chatting he had kind words for Lauch Faircloth of Sampson County for governor, and he seem ed sure that the Sampson man would run. Bob doesn't seem to hold a grudge, but on the other hand, he doesn't seem to forget! Come to think about it, Lauch Faircloth of Sampson County reminds me right much of Bob I Scott in his mannerisms. MEDICARE...We understand that White House budget plan ners are looking into further Medicare changes that would raise costs or reduce coverage for better off beneficiaries. Tentative ideas under consideration include re quiring beneficiaries to pay an ex tra premium for some of the basic health care currently available under the program, which provides I health care for the elderly and disabled. Medicare costs have been grow ing at more than a 159/o annual rate in recent years and are expected to reach nearly ISO billion in the year ending Sept. 30, 1982 ? just around the corner! The bulk of Medicare funding is from proceeds of health-insurancc taxes employers and employees pay under the Social Security Pro gram. SOCIAL SECURITY...I have been reading Washington forcecasts about Social Security for the future. I feel that Social Security is one of the finest programs that the New Deal led the people to accept in the Franklin D. Roosevelt Ad ministration. I remember so many people who had never had a regular check of S30 or more coming in every month. It was not conceived as a retire ment fund. It was to help the old people along, and it was greatly appreciated in its early days. Now, people seem to think that it should supply them with much more than the monthly checks pro vide, whether the money is in the "till" or not. I would like to see the program shaped to supply every one over 65 a good living. However, such is rot the case, and it was never intended for that. Now, the Social Security fund has been paying out more than is coming in, and I would personally prefer to have a little less than to see it run dry. The average person pays only one-half the amount of what goes into the program fot-him or her. The person or firm for whom he or she works must equal each and every worker's pay. This is a fine insurance program but if there continues too much drawing on the fund, it's just possible that some day "Old Mother Hubbard's Cupboard" may run dry. Then there would be much groaning and gnashing of teeth! SCHOOL PRAYER...It's hard to understand why Congress holds out against prayeT in our public schools, when the House and Senate in Washington and the General Assembly in North Carolina and other states, hold their sessions with prayer daily and nobody raises an objection.
