Mrs. Glenn Wood has returned
home after several weeks during

of her son and daughter-in-law,
Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Wood in
Newton, and the home of her
brother and his wife, Mr. and Mrs.
Roy H. Crouse in Sparta. While
away she also visited the World's
Fair in Knoxville.
Mr. and Mrs. Steve McNeill and
. family accompanied Mr. and Mrs.
I Monty Lamont and family of New
Bern to Holden Beach for the
weekend.
Mr. and Mrs. Wade Hendrix of
Charlotte were weekend visitors in
the home of Mrs. Hunter Carroll.
Mrs. Sarah AUigood and grand
daughter, Miss Carolina Alligood
of Fayetteville visited with Miss

returned Monday after spending
the weekend in the home of Mr.

Has Oct. Meet

ment of the Raeford Womans Club
met on Tuesday evening, October
5, at the home of Mrs. Eugene
Matherly, with Miss Ellen Currie
and Mrs. Jimmy Plummer, Sr.,
co-hostesses.
Miss Caroline Parker, chairman,
presided. During the business ses
sion members voted to help the
' other members of the departments
of the Raeford Womans Club to
work on getting people to the polls
to vote on November 2, Election
Day. Plans were also made for a
White Elephant Sale at their
December meeting.
Mr. Lloyd Home, director of
Hoke County Health Department,
presented the program during
. which he presented Health Care
' Statistics for Hoke County. He
stated that in I960 we spent 27
billion dollars nationally for health
care. In 1978, 182 billion dollars
were spent, an increase of 700
percent. In spite of these figures he
feels that the people of the nation
are no healthier. He also reported
that in spite of the Cancer Research
that is done the death rate is up,
and in spite of Health Research the
| heart deaths are up. As a, citizen he
contemplated as to whether we are
getting our money's worth. Five
nations have lower death cancer
rates, 10 nations have lower health
rates and 17 nations have higher
life expectancy, said Mr. Home.
He said that Public Health is
prevention. One of the biggest
killers in Hoke County and else
where is accidents. Good, healthy
' living can add 10 or 1 1 years to our
lives.
Mr. Home said that the biggest
four problems in our community is
adolescent pregnancy, hyperten
sion, communicable diseases, and
the tuberculosis rate; also in Hoke
County we have the second highest
rate of gonorrhea in the state and
increasing each year and that we
are tied for highest in the state for
I alcoholism. Repeatedly he said
prevention is the key to healthy
living, that there is no cost involved
and no side effects.

Suzanne Kirby of Raleigh visited
with her parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Carlton Niven at Holden Beach last
weekend.
Mrs. W.M. Blackman of High
Point spent a few days in the home
of her mother, Mrs. Carl Freeman,
last week. Mrs. Freeman returned
to Raeford with her after spending
the past two weeks in the Blackman
home.
Mr. and Mrs. Roy Wood and
daughter, Mrs. Suzanne Balfour,
returned home Saturday after
being called to Middlebury, Vt. last
week on account of the death of
Mrs. Wood's mother, Mrs. Lucius
Charron, who died suddenly on
Tuesday of a heart attack.
Mr. and Mrs. Tom Summers had
as their weekend guests, his
parents, Mr. and Mrs. T.S. Sum
mers, and his niece, Miss Fran
Wilkie, of Forest City.
Mr. and Mrs. George McFadyen
and twin sons of Tarboro spent the
weekend here with his parents, Mr.
and Mrs. D.B. McFadyen.

the Raeford Woman's Club met
Tuesday, Octobers, in the home of
Mrs. Bessie Davis, with Mrs.
J.B. McLeod as co-hostess.
Mrs. Charlotta King, chairman,
presided over the business session.
Mrs. Shirley Maxwell sponsored
Mrs. Kathleen Jones for the pro
gram on fall arrangements.
Mrs. Maxwell won the door
prize.
Refreshments were served follow
ing the program.

The Retired School Personnel of
Hoke County will meet Wednesday,
October 20, at 10:30 a.m. at Hoke
County Library.
Mr. Home of Hoke County
Health Department, will speak on
"The State of Health Affairs in
Hoke County."
Birth
Mr. and Mrs. Rodney Collins
announce the birth of their second
daughter, Ashley Blair, born on
Wednesday, Oct. 13, at Moore
Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Collins is
the former Rochelle Walters.
Homecoming Set
Homecoming will be observed
Sunday at Sandy Grove United
Methodist Church.
Sunday school will be held at 10
a.m., the worship service at 1 1 , and
a picnic lunch after the service.
The Rev. Russell Knowles, the
pastor, invites all members and
other friends of the church to
attend.

The Homecoming of Galatia
Presbyterian Church will be held
October 24.
The worship service will be held
at 11 a.m., and dinner on the
grounds will start at noon.

Autum Leaves Festival of Mt. Airy.
Mr. and Mrs. Paul Brafford of

Mr. and Mrs. J.K. McNeill, Jr.
spent the weekend at Isle of Palms
near Charleston. They were joined
by Mr. and Mrs. Jeff McNeill of
Clemson, S.C.
Mike Peckham and Beth Dorton of
Chapel Hill were overnight guests
of Mike's grandparents, Mr. and
Mrs. M.V. Peele on Friday and
Saturday night. They attended the
Hoke High-Reid Ross game at
Hoke High Friday night and the
Hoke High Band competition at
Seventy-First on Saturday after
noon. Hoke High won second
place.
Dr. Bob Townsend returned last
week after spending a week in San
Francisco, California, where he

Meets Oct. 5
The Raeford Friendship Club
held its regular monthly meeting on
Tuesday. October 5 at 2:30 p.m. at
the Raeford United Methodist
Church.
Mrs. J.T. Haire, president, pre
sided over the business session.
Minutes of the last meeting and
treasurers report was given by Miss
Isabel McFadyen. Get well cards
were mailed to the sick members:
Mrs. Eva Conoly, Mrs. Jeannie
Quick, Mrs. Christiana Howell and
Mrs. Rex Currie; and a sympathy
card mailed to Mrs. Leonard Miller
for the recent loss of her brother.
Mrs. Cleva Newton read an article
on National Shut-In Day to be
recognized on October 21.
Miss Josephine Hall gave mat
terial to members to make one quilt
square each and return to the next
meeting to be finished for the
needy. She also announced that the
Senior Citizen Craft Fair would be
held in Southern Pines October 15
& 16.
Mrs. Haire reminded the mem
bers of the trip being planned to the
State Fair in Raleigh, Monday,
October 18, and asked that those
interested to contact the Parks and
Recreation Department by October
8.

Meeting Attended

Dr. and Mrs. Riley Jordan
returned home Sunday after spend
ing last week at Lake Beuna Vista,
Florida, where Dr. Jordan attended
a Family Practice meeting. While
there they toured the Epcot Center,
which opened October 1. Friday
they left Florida for Atlanta where
they were weekend visitors in the
home of Mr. and Mrs. Tommy
Kennedy.

UDC Meets At
McFadyen Home
Misses Isabel McFadyen .And
Sarah Lytch were hostesses for the
October meeting of the Con
federacy Chapter at the McFadyen
home.
The devotional was led by Mrs.
Mary McNeill. Mrs. Lillian Wood,
president, presided and led the
Ritual, Allegiance and salutes to
the flags. During the business
session plans were made for money
raising projects and service projects
were discussed.
Miss Josephine Hall announced
that the luncheon for Mill Prong
Restoration project would be Oc
tober 24, at Bethel Church.
The program, "Poets and Poetry
of the Confederacy" was led by
Miss Josephine Hall. She had a
copy of the original words of "Old
Folks at Home" by Stephen Foster
on display. There was an in
teresting discussion of former resi
dents of our section of the state and
their contributions to the cultural
life of the state.
Miss Isabel McFadyen read the
poem of the month, "The Southern
Homes in Ruins", written by R.B.
Vance of North Carolina.
During the social hour a dessert
course with coffee was served by the
hostesses.

High School. The groom graduated
from Cleburne High School in
Cleburne, Texas and is serving in
the U.S. Army as Specialist Four.
The couple will be stationed in
Ft. Sam Houston, San Antonio,
Texas.
