This metal, more valuable than gold, seems very appropriate as a symbol for what the now 20-year-old Sandhill Regional Library System accomplishes. Automotive engineers employ platinum as a catalyst in catalytic converters. The Sandhill Regional Library System acts as the catalytic agent which has enabled its member libraries including Hoke County to change from small, rural libraries into modern resource centers. When founded in 1962, the Sandhill Regional Library System comprised just three counties - Richmond, Montgomery, and Moore. Anson County joined in 1968, Hoke in 1975, and the towns of Hamlet and Ellerbe in 1978. Participation in a regional sys tem enables member libraries to pool resources for better service. For example, the regional offices in Rockingham centralize the order ing and purchasing of materials and provide consultative staff for member libraries. The professional staff includes the regional director and assistant director, a children's librarian, two public service librarians, and two technical services librarians. In addition, the regional library system provides its members with quick access to all books and materials within the region. Any book not owned by a regional library can still be obtained through the interlibrary loan ser vice provided by the North Carolina State Library. A library card issued at one regional library is honored at all the others. The results of all these advantages are available free of charge to library patrons. Siifce its beginning in 1962, the Sandhill Regional Library System has increased its budget in real dollars by only four percent, but it has nearly tripled the number of books available to its public, which , now exceeds 164, 000. New library facilities have been constructed in Anson, Mont gomery, Moore, Hoke, and Eller be. In most cases, the libraries previously were found in old store fronts or houses and were crowded with books and materials. Recent construction, accomplished with Federal aid in most cases, provided spacious new quarters. Throughout the coming year, the Sandhill Regional Library System will celebrate its twentieth anni versary with special exhibits and programs. Plan to visit and support the Hoke County regional library. Discover, if you have not already, ^the vital role of the library in your community. Just as platinum resists corrosion and tarnish, so does the service rendered by the region continue to shine. Auction To Be Held At Ft. Bragg Thurs.
