Hoke Highli?hts The Future Business Leaders of America went to the fourth district meeting. Activities included a joint opening meeting and closing ses sion divided by seminars. Various subjects were presented. Among these subjects were drug awarness, photography, telecommunications, leadership skills, and energy. Eleven members of the Hoke County High Club attended the convention. The Student Government Asso ciation is making plans for the Homecoming. Decisions have been made concerning the weeks activi ties. Each class (freshman, sopho more, junior and senior) has been assigned a day to dress up and plan activities. A spirit award will be given to the most spirited class at the game on 1 Friday. [ Coach Andy Brown has accepted the position as Assistant Basketball Coach at Pembroke State Univer sity. He started taking over duties of this position last week. Mums are on sale for homecom ing. Health Occupations Students of America is sponsoring the sale. They are available for $3.50 each. Last Wednesday was the last day of the first six weeks of school. As you read this you're probably i reading and weeping because re i port cards have gone out today. Last week underclassmen's pic i tures returned. They were given out on Thursday. Hopefully some of our most \ "blessed" underclassmen will save some pictures for the horticulture classes. (The cuts in funds to the classes have made it impossible to purchase pesticides.) Annuals are on sale again this week. This will be the last oppor tunity to purchase an annual. The cost is $15.00 for underclassmen and $17.00 for seniors who wish to have their name placed on the annual cover. The Hoke High Chorus and Chorale will give their first perfor mance on Friday night at 6:15. This is in conjunction with the Hoke County Music Booster Club fried chicken dinner. Plates will be served beginning at 5 p.m. Tickets for the dinner are $3.50 in advance and $4 at the door. The band will also be performing. Free copies of Sourcebook '83 were distributed to seniors at Hoke Co. High. This 72-page magazine, designed to deal with timely topics for graduating seniors, is published by 13-30 Corporation for the U.S. Army, the exclusive advertiser. The 13-30 Corporation is the leading publisher of high school and college magazines. Sourcebook 83 is targeted to its 2.75 million readers. Articles range from a look at the best high school football players in the country to celebrated author Steven King's high school horrors. Also included are subjects such as living in a computer world, paying for college, learning to learn better and exploring jazz. Seniors get solid, practical in formation as well as entertainment from Sourcebook magazine. Hoke High Bucks upset Pine crest last Friday night, 10-8. This was a great accomplishment for Bucks. Pinecrest was 4th in the state. GO BUCKS! Health Occupations Students of American attended a leadership skills seminar last week. All of the officers of the club attended. County Students Named On FM A Honor Roll Last week Flora Macdon&ld Academy completed its fifth six week grading period and released the names of the following Hoke County students in grades 5 through 12 whose cumulative aver ages placed them on one of the academy's honor rolls. The Headmaster's Honor Roll requires a minimum average of 95 and students on the F.M.A. Honor Roll maintained averages of 90 to 94 for the grading period. School News Chorus, Chorale To Perform At Music Booster Dinner CLIMBING THE WALLS ? -? That could be one way of pulling it. but these students in Mrs. Eloise Carter's art class at Upchurch Junior High School are decorating a bare wall of the class's building into something bright. Mrs. Carter says other groups of her students will paint murals on adjoining naked walls also. The students in this photo, made October 6. all have the same first name ?? Terry. L-R ?? Holmes. McLaughlin, and McRae. They'd been making the mural for three weeks before the picture was taken. All three are Eighth Graders. The Hoke High School Chorus and Chorale is hard at work putting the finishing touches on their music for the Upcoming Musi? Booster Club dinner and concert. The Chorus and Chorale will perform in the Gibson Courtyard at Hoke High School at 6:15, on Friday, October 22. The combined groups open their performance with the tune "A Wonderful Day Like Today" by Leslie Bricus and Anthony Newly. This song is from the Broadway Musical "The Roar of the Grease paint- The Smell of the Crowd." The Chorus will perform the famous Harline song. "When You Wish Upon A Star." The Chorale will perform "All The Things You Are" by Jerome Kern. To close the mini-concert, the combined groups will perform a medley of American Songs. The Chorale is a group of advanced and highly talented jun iors and seniors. The officers of this group are Willett Bissett, President; Michelle Crotty, Vice-President; Denise Jude, Secretary; and James Odom, treasurer. Accompanists for the Chorale are Lisa Upchurch, Nadine Wadsworth and Alice Adkins. The chorus has 85 members, composed primarily of freshmen and sophmores under the leader ship of Ronnie Haynes, president; Kevin Locklear, vice-president; Kim Welles, secretary; and Brenda Hendren, treasurer. Accompanists for this group are Carolyn Wilde and Kim Welles. The chorus and Chorale invite the public to come and enjoy a delicious fried chicken dinner and join them in their first performance of the season.
