Winstead Wins Medal
Bill Winstead of Raleigh, son of
the Rev. and Mrs. Arthur Win
stead of Raeford. won the Iron
Man's Medal in the Sixth Iron Man
Tri-Ath-Lon World Championship
this month in West Hawaii.
He was among 850 athletes from
throughout the world who com
peted.
W instead completed the events
in 13 hours. Five hours better than
the maximum time allowed.. The
events are: a 2.6-mile swim in the
ocean, a 1 12-mile ride on a bicycle,
and a 26.4-mile run. The Tri-Ath
Lon started from the island of
Kaula.
During the competition the par
ticipants were faced by 35-miles
per-hour winds, gale force, and
high temperatures. Some dropped
out because of the heat.
Winstead has been an athlete
since childhood.
He runs in marathons in the
Eastern U.S. and competed in a
World's Fair on Okinawa as a
representative of the United States.
Winstead water skis also. In
college he played basketball, and in
high school he was named the Best
All Around Student in sports.
He works as Eastern North
Carolina representative for Mc
Graw Hospital Supplies, and lives
in Raleigh.
The Tri-Ath-Lon will be televised
in January on the ABC Wide World
of Sports (Channels 5 and 8).
Winstead's father is pastor of
Raeford United Methodist Church.

Weaver-McMillan Nuptials
Exchanged In Raleigh
Miss Donna Marie McMillan
and Arthur E. Weaver, Jr.. both of
Raleigh were married Saturday,
October 16 at 3:00 p.m. at Peace
Presbyterian Church with the Rev.
Thomas Spence. Jr. officiating.
The bride is the daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. David V. McMillan of
Fayetteville and the bridegroom is
the son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur E.
Weaver of Revere, Mass.
Angus Thomas Shaw, organist,
and Mrs. Marianna Shaw, soloist,
presented a program of wedding
music. Mrs. Shaw sang "The
Wedding Song" and "Whither
Thou Goest."
Two bouquets of mixed white
flowers centered the communion
table, flanked by two candle trees
trimmed with greenery. Assorted
ferns were used in the background.
The bride was escorted by her
father. She wore a wedding gown of
white polyorganza dotted swiss,
trimmed with Venice lace and
wedgewood lace. The fitted bodice
was adorned with silk Venice lace
and sequins with a sheer dotted
swiss yoke, and full length sleeves
trimmed in lace. The hoop skirt.
Southern Belle style, was tiered
with wedgewood lace and pick-up
bows. Her headpiece was a wide
brimmed hat trimmed with silk
Venice lace and sequins, shoulder
length with illusion streamers; the
train was chapel length. She car
ried a nosegay of white daisies and
greenery with white satin
streamers. v
Miss Leesa Moore of Raleigh was
maid of honor. She wore a tea
length lavender voile gown,
trimmed in Raschel lace and
carried a nosegay of Pink and
lavender flowers.
Bridesmaids were Miss Deborah
Davis of Charlotte, Miss Mary
Gratch of Chapel Hill. Miss Janet
Henderson and Miss Frankie John
son, both of Fayetteville and Miss
Jo Smith of Aberdeen. Their
dresses and nosegays were identical
to the maid of honor's.
David M. Weaver, brother of the
groom, of Revere. Mass. was best
man. Ushers were David McMil
lan, Jr. of Fayetteville. brother of
the bride; Robert Lear of Revere.
Mass.. Stephen Hill. James Logue
and Paul Regan of Raleigh.
The bride is a graduate of the
University of North Carolina at
Chapel Hill with a bachelor's
degree. She is employed by Oh
Brian's Corps.
The bridegroom is employed by
Delta Airlines as a customer service
agent.
After a wedding trip to Hawaii
the couple will be at home in
Raleigh.

The University of North Carolina
at Greensboro has an enrollment of
10,126 this fall, including five
students from Hoke County.
Hoke is among 95 counties in the
state that are represented by stu
dents at UNC-G during the current
academic year.
The students are: Janet E. Best,
Laurie J. Capps, Myra B. McNeill,
Isaac A. Sandy, and Diane M.
Sappenfield. all of Raeford.

the former Donnie Lytle of Raeford

munity. Members of the Lytle
family from Hoke County attended
the wedding and festivities.
