STA TE RANKS ~ These Hoke County players recently were given rankings in North Carolina Junior Tennis for
1982. L-R ? Melynee Morgan, ranked 31 in girls age 12 singles and, with Wendy Simpson in girls age 12 doubles;
Wendy simpson, ranked 27 in girls age 12; Jeff Semones, 45th in boys age 12 singles; Bill Upchurch, ninth in
boys age 10 singles, and seventh with Donald James of Lumberton in doubles for that age; and William Carter,
18th in singles for boys age 12.
CHAMPION, CONSOLATION/STS -- Jeff Semones ( center ) won the championship of the class for boys age
12 in the October 16-17 North Carolina-South Carolina Borderline Tennis Classic tournament held at Laurin

Hoke Junior Netters Get Ranked
The North Carolina Tennis Asso
ciation is the governing body for
tennis in this state.
In order to be ranked by this
state organization, junior players
must compete in at least four
tournaments which have been sanc
tioned by the U.S.T.A..
Each tournament score is com
piled, and those who are ranked are
considered to be the top players in
the state.
Throughout the state 33 ten-year
old boys, 46 twelve-year old girls,
and 46 twelve-year-old boys were
ranked.
Raeford had five juniors who
were ranked. Bill Upchurch ranked
9 in the 10-year-old boys, Wendy
Simpson ranked 27 and Melynee
Morgan was 31 in the 12-year-old
Raeford Merchants Bowling

ranked 45.
Tai Adeleke has coached these
young people and reports that he is
pleased with the ranking these boys
and girls have received.
He says it shows that their hard
work has paid off.

Denise Evans Scores High In Region Meet
Denise Evans, a member of the
Class III Sandhill Gymnastics
team, competed in the first N.C.
Eastern Regional sanctioned meet
of the 1982-1983 season, held on
the weekend of October 23-24, in
Wilmington.
Both Class III and Class IV
competed. There were 144 girls,
representing 15 different teams
competing during the two days.
Denise is the daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Raymond Evans of W.
Cole Ave. Ext. of Raeford and a 6th
grade student at the J. W. Turling
ton School.
Denise won a second place
ribbon for her vaulting, first place
ribbon for her performance on the
beam, first place ribbon for the
uneven parallel bars, first place
ribbon for the floor exercise and
First place ribbon for all-around.
Denise also qualified for the
N.C. State meet to be held in
Raleigh on February 19-20, 1983,
with a total score of 34.45 in the
four events.
To qualify for the State meet, a
gymnast must have a total score of
31 or better at any one meet.

second place for total team score.
The team is coached by Sandra
MacMillan. Besides a Class III
team, Sandhills has a Class II team
and also offers classes from tod
dlers to advanced gymnastic stu
dents.
