County House On Governor's Tour Ihe tnergy Division of the North Carolina Department of Commerce and the Alternative Energy Cor poration today announced the se lection of a Hoke County home for inclusion in the Governor's Show case of Solar Homes. Shelley Dial will be opening his house to the public free pf charge between 1:00-5:00 p.m. on Novem ber 14 and 21 . The house is located off of Highway 211. 8 miles southeast of Raeford. The Governor's Showcase of Solar Homes is a program featuring moderately priced and convention ally styled homes throughout the state of North Carolina. "By the end of 1982, this Showcase project will give all the people of our state a chance to see first hand how cost-effective a solar investment can be." Hunt said in announcing the program. "Every one of our citizens should be able to visit several Showcase homes and see a variety of solar designs in less than a day's drive." he added. The Dial house is one of the popular energy-efficient passive solar models designed and financed by the Farmer's Home Administra tion. Selling for S34.000 with 1,000 square feet of living space, the home is ideal for single persons or couples with a limited budget. The Dial house is oriented due south and contains large south facing windows to collect winter sunlight. Much of this sunlight enters directly into the living area, but at least half strikes the waist high brick walls located just behind each window . These walls gradually heat up during the day and continue to radiate warmth into the living space long after the sun has set. Showcase manager John Manuel says, "Anyone who has considered buying a new home in the foresee able future should stop by the Dial house. This is an excellent example of conventional styling and energy efficiency in an affordable price range." Maps to the 21 local Showcase homes will be available at the Dial house. Directional signs will also be placed along the highways. Enviro-Chem Co EXTERMINATORS Household Pest Control 120 W . EDINBOROUGH AVE. Jim Conoly OFFICE 875 8146 RAEFORD, N.C. Carolina Christmas Show Kicks Off November 18 One of the great joys of the holiday season is beautiful music - and there will be plenty of it during the Fifth Annual A CAROLINA CHRISTMAS SHOW November 18-21. 1982. at the Raleigh Civic Center. Visitors to this year's Show will be entertained by 13 choral groups from area schools, talented local doggers, and orchestras. Special features include a puppet troupe from Mount Olive called the Salem Church House Kids, a talented group of high school students who were the hit of last year's show. Perhaps the most special of the choral groups is a wonderful choir composed of little folks -- four, five, and six year olds from Pam's School in Raleigh. To hear them sing "Silent Night" and "Jingle Bells" brings a whole new meaning to the spirit of Christmas music. They have performed at the Show for the last three years and are well worth coming to see on Friday morning. November 19th at 10:30 a.m. Little voices, big voices, and talented musicians will fill the air from morning 'til night in the Village Green. Entertainment is just a part of this year's Carolina Christmas Show. More than 290 exhibitors from throughout the country will be displaying unique gifts and art work. They will be gathering in the Holiday Marketplace for four excit ing days. The Carolina Village, featuring 1980's storefronts, is the heart of the Show and features Christmas trees decorated in all their splendor and rooms decorated to inspire beautiful homes for show visitors. The Village is a show place of Christmas decoration, plants, and music. The show dates are November 18-21, 1982. The Show is located in the Raleigh Civic Center. Show hours are 12:00 Noon 'til 9:00 p.m. on Thursday; 10:00 a.m. 'til 9:00 p.m. Friday and Saturday; and 12:00 Noon 'til 6:00 p.m. on Sunday. Mine picks the pills out of her food and 1 have trouble dropping them down her throat. Answer: Dogs love cheese, most any kind of cheese, so try inserting the pill into a small chunk of cheddar: a half inch square will do. Or spread the pill with peanut butter or stick it in a hors d'oeuvres-sized section of hotdog. Key to success is giving your .pet three or four pieces of the cheese or hotdog without medication to con dition her to think of the food as a treat. She will wolf subsequent treats down without another chew. Also a wide range of medications now come flavored as treats. Ask your veterinarian the next time he prescribes pills. Dear Doctor: My cat eats less food in the summer. Is this normal? Answer: Pets, like humans, re quire less calories during very warm weather so, yes, a drop off in appetite is normal in the summer. Your cat may favor the air condi tioner as a perch because of the hum and vibrations -? cats fre quently climb on top of the refrigerator for the same soothing reason. Such behavior is not harm ful. However, if there is cool air coming out of a vent directly on the cat. she could develop a runny nose; and if this is the case, her sitting on the air conditioner should be discouraged. Dear Doctor: Some friends want to give us their 4-year old shepherd when they are transferred to Europe this fall. 1 am concerned that it won't adapt to our family. Answer: Chances are you will have no problems. However, a trial run is recommended. Before the family leaves, have them bring the dog along with some of his bedding or. a favorite rug. toys or an article with the owner s scent to your house for a weeks stay. Success will depend on the shepherd's person ality and how engrained an attach ment he has formed with his owners.
