Hollers: State
Making Effort
To Ease Hazard
State officials are making an
effort to head off a potentially
dangerous traffic problem at the
U.S. 401 at the entrance of the new
Raeford-Hoke Village Shopping
Center.
"We're looking into creating a
center turn lane." state District
Eight Highway Commissioner
Martha Hollers said Friday.
State Rep. Daniel H. DeVane
called Hollers earlier in the week
and alerted her to the problem.
"I've talked to Danny and have
called some people at the state
office," Hollers said, adding that
officials are looking into finding the
funds for the project and might
attempt to get the shopping center
to pay part of the cost.
He called Hollers after city
officials received a negative re
sponse to a request for state
assistance with the matter. DeVane
said.
Officials fear that the increased
traffic at the intersection might
cause a serious accident.
State engineers were reluctant to
give the city an OK on lowering the
speed limit around the shopping
center from 55 to 45 miles per hour.
Raeford Manager Ronald Mat
thews said during a November 8
council meeting.
State engineers were also dis
couraging about the possibility of
installing a caution light or con
structing a right turn lane, Mat
thews said.
The situation is dangerous, and
something should be done about it.
Hollers said.
Girl Seoul Nevus
Ivey Thigpen visited Cadette Girl
Scout Troop #521 on Thursday at
their regular meeting.
A film was shown showing how
deaf or hearing-impaired children
are taught to talk.
Mrs. Thigpen explained the film;
how the children were taught, the
special equipment used, and about
the Schools for the Deaf in N.C.:
Wilson, Greensboro, and Morgan
ton.
Morganton is the only school
that has high school grades.
Mrs. Thigpen also explained how
important it is for the hearing
impaired children to be treated the
same as other children except that
you should face them when speak
ing to them, to speak distinctly,
and slightly slower than usual.
She taught the Scouts to say their
names. "Girl Scouts." and the
alphabet in sign language.
< The girls enjoyed Mrs. Thigpen's
visit and may have a better
understanding of those less fortu
nate than themselves.
Mrs. Thigpen also visited Junior
Troop #201 last week at J.W.
Turlington School.
In a year's time 30 tons
of barnacles can attach
themselves to the bottom
of an ocean-going ship.
