Fall Athletes Honored At Hoke High Awards Day Awards Day for the fall sports was held on Wednesday in cere monies held at Hoke High. During the ceremony awards and honors earned in Hoke High's fall sports were presented the Hoke Athletes. Athletes from Varsity !Football, Cross-Country and Girl's Volleyball and Tennis were honored. "This is a different procedure and something new we are trying," Hoke Athletic Director Bill Colston said. "In the past awards have been given at the end of the year at the Annual Athletic Banquet which is sponsored by the Booster Club. The Hoke Coaching Staff has decided to change this for two reasons. "One, we are trying to increase school spirit and the morale of our athletes by presenting the awards to the athletes in an assembly involv ing the entire student body. "Secondly, we are trying to save time at the Athletic Banquet in the Spring. Under the new format we will have an awards ceremony for fall sports, one for winter sports and one for spring sports in addition to the Athletic Banquet," Colston said. In the ceremonies Wednesday, four members of the Varsity Foot ball team were honored. Senior Lee McNeill was named the MVP for the 1982 season. Bobby McCraney received the Sam's Award for best lineman, Calvin Dixon was named the Best Offensive Player and William Locklear was named the Best Defensive Player. In Cross Country, Conference Champion Paul Hunt received the Most Valuable Player Award. In Volleyball, Greta Johnson received the MVP Award and Sophomore Sharon McNeill re ceived the Coaches Award. In Girl's Tennis, Cindy Frahm was named as the MVP for her .sport. FOOTBALL SQUAD HONORED ? Hoke County High School's head football coach, Tom Jones, addressing the audience of Hoke High students and staff the morning of November 17 in Mac Donald Gymnasium during u special program honoring the school's football players, managers, coaches, and associates of I9N2. The varsity Bucks won 3 and lost 7 the past season but it was a great improvement over the previous two (1-9) vears, and things are looking up for the future. Eight Bucks Named All-Conference Eight Hoke High School athletes have been tapped for Southeastern 4A All Conference honors reports Hoke High Athletic Director Bill Colston. Hoke placed three athletes on the All-Star Football team, two on the All-Star Cross Country team and three on the girl's Volleyball team. Three of Hoke's Varsity Football team were named to the All-Con ference Team. The All-Conference team is chosen by a vote of the seven coaches whose teams make up the conference. Hoke's Gary Stephens, who won the league receiving title, headed the All-Conference receiving corps. Stephens caught 28 passes for 498 yards and two touchdowns. Joining Stephens on the All Conference team was Hoke's Lee McNeill, a unanimous selection on the defensive line and linebacker William Locklear. In Cross Country, Hoke placed two members on the All Conference team. In addition to this, Hoke Coach Ron Parsons was named as South eastern 4A Cross Country Coach of the Year for his leadership in guiding Hoke to the Conference Championship this year. The All Conference Cross Coun try team is selected based on the individual order of finish in the Conference Championship Meet at the end of the regular season. The top seven finishers are named to the honors team. Hoke's Paul Hunt placed first in the meet winning the individual Conference Championship. Joining Hunt on the honors team was teammate Ronnie McRae who placed 3rd in the conference meet. In Volleyball Hoke placed three of its members on the honors All Star Team. Volleyball selections are made by the coaches of the seven teams in the Southeastern 4A Conference. Hoke placed Greta Johnson. Jean McCormick and Laurice Slade on the team.
