Around Town (Continued from page I ) ? time for parents of the kids. * * * Don't forget that the concert of the Hoke High School Chorus and Chorale is scheduled for Thursday night. December 16 at eight o'clock at the MacDonald Gymtorium. This is always one of the best Christmas events of the season, so be sure to attend. * * * I haven't heard how successful the Pancake Supper of the Raeford Kiwanis Club turned out to be, so we will have to let you know at a later date. The crowd wasn't as large as one would expect when I was there for the evening. The pancakes were top rate and the fellowship was also tops. Just another annual event in Raeford you shouldn't miss. ? ? * Maybe most folks have com pleted their Christmas shopping at this time. If you haven't done so, then please remember the advice handed down each year by Chief of Police Leonard Wiggins. When you leave your car be sure to lock the doors. If you are going to leave packages in the car. then be sure to lock them in the trunk of the car. When you leave your car un locked it is tempting for someone to look inside. If packages are in sight, then someone may try to pick your lock or break a window to obtain them. Just be careful, for the things you buy are too expensive for someone else to use for Christmas. ? * ? The Christmas secton of The News-Journal will appear next week and we believe that it will be the best that has ever been published. Much work has already been done on it and we are looking forward to completing it this week. If you read this column early Wednesday you still have time to place an advertisement, so give us a call, and don't be left out. * # * If you haven't been downtown at night this past week or so be sure to do so. The Christmas decorations are all lighted and they look great. CUSTOMER SERVICE Dundarrach, N.C. CAU TOIL-FREE FOR CURRENT RATE INFORMATION: 1800-239-861 6 ? ^ i Local Mishap A 2-ycar-old Fayetteville boy was injured but apparently not seriously, when the car in which he was riding collided with a pickup truck about 10:55 a.m. Monday on North Main Street at Vass Road Raeford Police Chief Leonard Wiggins reported. He said the boy Mark Taylor, 321 Dudley Dr., was taken to Womack Army Hospital at Ft. Bragg for treatment. Wiggins said the driver of the car. An Sun Wright, 48-A Cam bridge Arms, Fayetteville, was charged with a safe-movement violation. He said Wright failed to stop her car at the stop sign on SR 1405 as she was traveling south, and the car struck the northbound truck being driven by Charles Alexander Pittman, Rt. 2, Raeford, on Vass Road where it emerges from North Main. He said the damages were about $2,200 to the car, a 1982 Chevrolet, and about SI ,300 to the truck, a 1982 Dodge pickup owned by the Hoke County Board of Education. Temperature Dropped To 18, Then 17 Degrees Cold and wet, then colder was Hoke County's weather story last weekend, according to Robert Gatlin's official figures. Gatlin, local observer for the National Weather Service, reported his official thermometer showed the temperature dropped to 18 and rose no higher than 39 on Monday, then went to 17 Tuesday before rising to 49, its highest, in the warmest part of the day. He reported also the rainfall Saturday and Sunday totaled 2.1 inches, but no snow fell, as it did in neighboring Moore County (only a flurry, though and nothing stuck). Coop Rates Hiked 8.5% On Jan. 1 For Lumbee River Electric Membership Corporation, New Year's Day will mean far more than the end of the 1982 holiday season; it'll mark the beginning of a new and more costly phase of wholesale rates from Carolina Power and Light Co. CP&L will raise its rates for Lumbee River and 17 other rural electric cooperatives effective Jan. 1. For the 18 co-ops, the increase will average about 9% or $11.2 million a year. Lumbee River EMC member consumers will see an increase of about 8.5%. The new rates will show up on the "A" cycle bills of January 10, covering the usage of December. Without the agreement, the original rate hike would have taken effect on Oct. 24. Correction The Hoke County commis sioners at their December 6 meeting adopted a motion to re quest the Lumbee Regional Development Association, Inc. to submit to the countywide Raeford Housing Authority and the county commissioners any new application the association prepares for federal aid for low rent housing for the elderly. The commissioners did not, as The News-Journal reported, adopt a motion endorsing a renewed ap plication for federal funds. Earlier this year, LRDA applied for federal help to establish hous ing at Rockfish and in South Hoke, but the application was turned down on grounds the government requires housing for the elderly be located close to medical and dental facilifies and shopping areas.
