This program is administered by the N.C. Division of Parks and Recreation, and is designed to preserve unique natural habitats throughout the State. The 14 sites represent a broad range of the habitats found in the Sandhills ? including old-growth long-leaf pine savannas, pine flat woods, evergreen shrub bogs, white cedar stands, hardwood swamp forests, and black-water streams. The seven rare or en dangered animals found in these areas include the Bachman's spar row, Carolina gopher frog, pine barrens tree frog, red-cockaded woodpecker, red-shouldered hawk, Swainson's warbler, and the tiger salamander. In fact, on one night 17 species of frogs were recorded at one of the sites ? the richest diversity of frogs ever reported from a single Merchants Bonding league Top Ten Bowlers Sylvester McAllister 178 James Nixon 176 Alexander Kelly 175 Luther Taylor 172 Mike Nicves 169 L.arry Black 169 Lee Dixon 163 Howard Hendrix 163 George Hendrix 163 Lonzell Kelly 162 200+ And High Series Phillip Smith 209 Larry Black 2 1 5 - 529 Scries Dwight Crawford 204 Results of 12-23-82 Shoe Chest 0 Michael's 4 Foursome 1 Strikers 3 Hollingsworth Bus Co. 3 Auto Parts 1 Towne Barber Shop 1 Hollingsworth Florist 3 Schedule for 12-30-82 Auto Parts vs. Hollingsworth Florist Hollingsworth Bus Co. vs. Towne Barber Shop Foursome vs. Shoe Chest Strikers vs. Michael's J.H. Also, eight species of rare and en dangered plants are found on these areas. These unique sites will be managed jointly by the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission and the Natural Heritage program. The Wildlife Commission owns the Sandhills Game Land -- unlike most other game lands which are owned by private interests or other government agencies and are managed by lease or cooperative agreements -- and has managed the area intensively to protect the en dangered red-cockaded wood pecker. In addition, the area offers excellent deer and quail hunting. "These sites on the Sandhills Game Land offer a rich addition to the Natural Heritage program," said Joseph W. Grimsley, secretary of the N.C. Department of Natural Resources and Community Development. "We appreciate the cooperation that the Wildlifd Commission has shown by enroll ing these areas in the Natural Heritage program, which plays a vital role in preserving beautiful and unique natural areas throughout our State."
